High altitude, 4-1 exhaust and rejetting
I have the V&H system on my bike and it never has been right off of idle up to about 2800 RPM. It has been jetted twice by 2 different Honda Dealers and neither one could get it to pull cleanly off of idle. They say that it has something to do with the back pressure that the pipe produces. It works killer at higher RPM's but not so much at the lower end. I going to take it to D&D exhaust and see if they can fit one of their cans on to it and maybe cure the problem.
Do you have the 4-2-1 Supersport or the 4-1 SSR2? I'd like to lose the weight and lean my bike out a little because it's running rich, but not at the expense of what you're talking about - a flat spot like that would drive me crazy. One of my riding buds said when I got on my bike hard today he could smell gas - this was about 9,000 ft elevation - I wonder if I should just try to rejet my original exhausts...Anyone who has done this tell me if I have to take the carbs out of the bike to do this?
Well the bike accellerates perfectly from idle to redline and averages 44 mpg so it can't be running TOO rich, I guess I'll just install Supersport exhaust and hope for the best.
Installed the V&H tonight, and all I can say is SHWEEET!!! The did everything I wanted them to - lost 30+ lbs, look great and I can definately tell some hps in the mid-upper rpms. The sound really gives the bike personality too. There is a little dearth of power from 1-3k, but there wasnt any power there to begin with - the important this is a smooth throttle transition - no need to mess with the carbs! can you tell I'm happy? I'll post pix of the bike this week.
