got running took for a ride new ? possible problem
well the cane is up and running.
One is it has a loud rattle that the guy thought was the exhaust flange. It sounds like it is coming from the motor is it the cam chain?
then i havent tuned it up but if i go down the road one problem is that the throttle either sticks or it doesnt respond.
Could it be the tubes or do the cables need to be lubed? or do i need new cables.
also when i get going it doesnt wanna go faster than 30 it seems in 1st. is this normal or is there a problem with the tranny or could it have a different sprocket on it maybe?
thanks for the responses sorry i have so many questions just trying to get a cane that is a little abused back to its rightful place.

Rattle (if motor is cold) is probably the camchain. If rattle is continuous when motor is warm, it could be the primary drive chain too. Pull off the tappet cover and the camchain cover and push on the chain between the two cam sprockets - if there's any slack, that's probably the culprit.
Throttle has two cables, one pulling, one pushing, and they have springs in the carbs.
Try lubricating them, the throttle should snap closed when released. May also be sticking in the carbs themselves - a good stripdown and clean is probably the way to go.
30MPH in first - even with a lower than 17/42 std ratio, that's way too low.
Mine does 50+-odd MPH in first with std ratios. Maybe clutch is slipping ?

I find that my throttle works fine without the tank on , but as soon as I place the tank on it does tend to bind up a bit. I've taken the tank off and on to try to see if its fetching up on anything but it appears to be routed properly under the tank. I think the angle of the cables are too sharp for the bike especially when your making a hard right-hand turn. Anyone els have this problem, or is it mine is over sticking?

ok i will try and describe it more. it seems quick to about 40 mph but then it wants u to shift. Also it shifts perfect. no false shifts or anything just right into the next gears.
what is the typical gear to mph like example my old 636 i could do 72 in 1st.
thanks again for all the help hoping to have it rideable and restored shortly.

The old 636 was a much higher revving engine, and could get to higher speeds before changing.
Technology is also more advanced in the newer 600 range.
Check the manual for ratios, or look through the previous posts.
I do remember that top of third gear is 105 MPH (about 168 KPH)
Mine does 85 MPH at 5300 RPM, and 100MPH at 6000RPM in top gear.

Same here first gear is to me short on my 87. Anything past 35 it feels like it wants to change gears. But could go faster in first if pushed. Defintently lube your cables. When I got my bike I changed all clutch and brake fluids. Also coolant in the radiator. Just for added peace of mind and to know it was fresh. Also make a maintance record of all that you do. No guessing later on.
