Default got her started!!!

Phoned the Honda mech and told him what the bike wouldn't start and assumed it was the starter sprag clutch, etc... He said didn't sound like the prob, try this: arc the two terminals on the (he called it starter solanoid) manual calls it starter relay, (left hand side of bike under cover) with pliers and guess what, it fired up, i was a sooo happy!!! Still wouldn't start using starter switch, phoned again, he said 'give the solanoid a hit with a hammer', did this, and it started first go!!! I was a very happy man, I was thinking $700-1,000 repair bill. Thought i would post this in case anyone else has this prob, pic attached...

It might be the starter needing new brushes. Check them if the problem comes back, which it probably will.

R1000 is right. I used this trick on a old truck I had. It works for a while but then it will go bad for good. Use it while you can but get ready to fix something.

Well, i'm not sure how clunking the solenoid with a hammer would free up any problem in the brushes area. Maybe they do need attention but that is a separate issue. This is a case of the contacts in the solenoid sticking, likely through a build up of grunge through sparking between the contacts and the hammer blow free's them off. All perfectly normal and indicating a new solenoid is the order of the day.

There aren't any brushes in a solenoid. Just contacts that that can stick if they get dirty. I've had them sick closed so the starter runs after the key is turned off! Now that really sux!

yep, +1 ^

get a new relay, even a simple repco relay that can handle the amps and you should be back in business.
the relay contacts are anodes and cathodes from which an electron jumps the gap (similar to spark plug) and eventually builds up to the extent where the contacts will momentarily weld together against the natural spring of the metal used. a sharp blow is often enough tu bust the fusion, but it will eventually stop working.

if you need a hand working out the wiring just mail me

Not good on the electrics, how many amps does the relay need to handle? If i go to a Repco shop with the relay will they be able to give me a replacement?

a normal 30amp relay should work, take in the starter relay, and they may even be able to tell you which wire goes where.
its not as hard as it looks.
there is 4 pins, 2 of them are a circuit that activates the starter and the other 2 make a switch that gets thrown out to roll the starter over.

if you feel game and get one i'll even take some pics for a how-to
