Default Another day another wheel bearing failure!

Yep, another set gone after only 200 miles! But I think I found out why. After removeing the bearings I cleaned out the bearing recess and found that one of the "mechanics" had missed the bearing with a punch from the opposite side and hit the bottom of the wheel on the left side pushing up a "dimple" causing: 1 the bearing to not seat fully and at a slight angle; 2 allowing too much clearance betwen the center spacer in the wheel and the bearings; 3 in turn caused side loading of the bearings when the axle nut was torqued; 4 causing the bearings to fail!!

So I dressed up the spot in the wheel so the bearing would seat and found that the center spacer had been hammered down about .018" so there was still too much side loading when tightened. I made a .020" shim and installed it next to the center spacer before putting the wheel bearing in. NOW the wheel rotates freely without any resistance when torqued down.

Fixing previous repairs by others is a but tedious at times!

Finding a good mechanic is of paramount importance, I have found a very good auto mechanic, but bike mechanic, well that's another story

It sounds like you're onto the details that apply, have a clear understanding of how the assembly works. You'll have it if you don't already. Good luck.
