Default Fuel problem?

My bike has been laid up for a month. The waiting list to get into a shop here is a joke (Colorado).
The bike will be fine for a day or so, then won't start easily, is full of vibrations, stinks of petrol
and will not idle. It will sit a 1k for a few seconds then just die. Also it is "jumpy" under acceleration.

Is this a problem with dirt in the carbs or somthing? The weather is cracking here, but I can't take her out.
Most depressing.

Ideas anyone?

My Kaw just did the exact same thing to me two weeks ago. I had run the fuel low and got some gunk up under the needle, not letting it go down. Also ended up getting some water in the carbs for same reason (low fuel). Tried simple solutions like running some denatured alcohol through and changing out plugs, but turns out, only thing to do was take carbs off and blow out. Sounds like same problem, maybe same solution?

First I would check the spark plugs, change them, check the ignition timing, then completely clean the carbs, including the top and bottom. To bad you don't live near Denver.

Yes I did a nice little inline clear filter that takes all of about 1 minute to change inspect or throw away and it cost AU $ 7.00 how easy is that simply undo the screw on the right side cover then unscrew the two hose clamps Easy !!

Maybe, but I live in Denver. All you need to check the timing is an old timing light. And changing the spark plugs is quite simple if you use anti-seize, set the correct gap, torque 'em down correctly, and put the correct plug wire on. Cleaning the carbs is more involved, maybe a three or four hour job, with half the time spent getting the carbs off and back on the bike.
