I just thought that if it was out far enough to need adjusted that it was either making noise or vibrating too bad.
I've never fiddled with mine, but thought about it maybe next time i do my valves....

Hey Kil & Tallenuf,

I had the completed another service today (my Cane travels about 1500klms a week) and I decided to adjust the balancer due to hands going numb - I turned exactly 67 times anticlockwise - never came to a stop. I fired the bike up and commenced turning another 30 times - no change in sound, no wind, no rattle - what's going on?

Not sure Boink. When I turn mine with the bike running there is a definite change in sound within a half rotation or less. With the bike off it would spin round and round with no resistance.

The Honda Service Manual for 90 - 91 CBR1000F says to adjust thebalancer shaftwith the engine cold (below 35 deg C / 95 deg F) and the engine stopped. It says to turn the shaft counterclockwise to dead end, and back clockwise one gradation. I've never been able to find said 'dead end', but in the past have found an area of increased resistance, and took that as the dead end. ThistimeI was unable to feel that resistance. I'm assuming that the adjustment is an eccentric that sets clearance between driven and drive gears. If that's the case wear would accumulate until there is no 'dead end'.Lasttime I setback lash it was done bythe book. This timeit was done with the engine running - counterclockwise a notch, rev to 5,000, idle, up a notch, rev to 5,000 until the vibration was at minimum and a whine could be heard, then clockwise a notch at a time until the whine disappeared.Interestingly, a rattlethat had me concerned also disappearedafter adjusting the backlash.

It appears that turning the engine backwards, which I did when replacing the drive sprocket, can upset the balancer shaft backlash. At least, that's when vibration and noise showed up. Prior to that everything was just fine.

Tall & DRam - thanks.

DRam, I did not rev the motor at all, I'll try it out this week end when I replace the spark plugs - didn't have a spanner to fit them!

If the adjuster wont lock up the balancer has been removed from the engine. That is why it vibrates your hands badly. I am not shore but you might be able to check by removing the sump and having a look in side?
