For a few weeks now my bike has been leaking something. I took the plastics off the other week and the engine was such a mess from the leak I couldn't tell what the heck was going on. I suspected the oil filter so I cleaned everything up and replaced it. I still have the leak! Just today I took and closer look, along with some photos. I believe I've finally found the problem(s) but I'm not sure how to fix it.

I believe it's the waterpump that is leaking where it bolts to the engine, but it seems like more of an oily feel that coolant.......? Also, I get something on my fingers when I run them under one of the coolant tubes that bolts to the engine right behind the 3rd cylinder.

Any advice on how to solve the problems is my appreciated! I've had the bike parked for 4 days and there is a 12" diameter stain under my bike already!

There's a $2.00 "O" ring behind the water pump that seals the joint between the water pump and the engine casing. There are another 2 "O" rings that seal the water pipes where they enter the cylinders, right where your 3rd picture is showing a leak as well. I wouldn't think it would be too tough of a job to replace them all. Try BikeBandit or Crotchrocket for the actual prices on the parts.

RONAYERS.com (spelling?) has same thing and nearly same prices.The exploded views can be enlarged so you can see how things go together. You will have to go to 2-3 of the drawings to see all the pump and coolent details. I've used them for a few things with no problems. I posted the other day about water hose and pump service life as I have a few weepers on my '94. Good Luck!

 

There is a cooling system leak fix sold in the auto parts store. Works like this: you drain the coolant, flush system with water, add leak fix, runmotor for a while, drain leak fix, flush systemwith water, and replace coolant. It is guaranteed to sealleaks like yours.Used to sell for $60 about 4 years ago when I tried it on a carbut now sellsconsiderably lower.Never tried on a motorcycle though, but I dont see why not. If you choose to replace the seals you may want to use a torque wrench to achieveequal tightening of the bolts or it could still leak.Sometimelast year I experienced similarcoolant leakafter 350 mile trip. Ibelieve that the leakage ocurred overnight after the bike had cooled and the temperature had dropped sharply. In the morningthere was about 2 meters of coolant flow marking the pavement begining under the bike. I did nothing, after checking that there was enough coolant. And it has not leaked since.

The o ring behind the pump is the easier one of the two to do, but take care when taking the pump off to get at it as you will upset the rubber seal, sealing the pump. The next one is a little more awkward as the bolt will come out but you have to do the whole lot that hold the pipe in place and I recommend that you replace all the seals. Gently loosen the the pipe by tapping with a plastic or rubber hammer ( you may be tempted to use a sledge)and apply pressure to the pipe as evenly as possible to pull outwards from the bike. Because the pipe is not flexible it has very little movement and will not release until the last moment, so be patient. Once the pipe is off clean up the areas where the new seals are to go and the pipe and reassemble. Your problem should now be solved. Good luck!
