Default 1st Carb Tune; Sync and Pilot adjust

Hello, I have been lurking on this forum for a while but I had to join and ask for some help with my first attempt to tune my carbs. My bike is a 93 CBR1000F and was obviously raced at one point in its life. The carbs are all over the place and I need to do a full sync and pilot air adjustment.
I have pulled the tank, carbs, and air box but now I have a fewquestions:

If I try to run the bike from an external fuel sourcewill I need to apply vacuum to anything, or can I just block the vacuum line that goes to thePetcock?
What should I use for the "external tachometer" that the manual refers to?
I have a 12v dwell/tach unit thatI use on my car. If I use thatwhere would I attach the powered wire?
Are there any special tools required other than the tach, the synchronizer, and the pilot screw adjustor?
Any other tips you guys have would really be appreciated. I hate to see the bike all torn apart and really want to get her buttoned up as soon as possible. Thanks

Welcome to the Forum !
I can only help with your first question - if you block the vacuum line that runs from the petcock to the point between carbs one and two, you can run on another fuel source.
I'm about to sync my carbs too, let's see what the guys come up with on the rest.
Pilot air corrections should start at 21/2 turns out, as I recall....

My first comment is - "Put the airbox back on first"

I did mine with it off - then something told me to re do them after re assembly of the airbox.

Glad I did - they were all out again - not by much but they were out.

Better to synch the carbs as the bike will run.

Dont worry about an external tachometer - that suggestion is generally for car drivers who can't see the
dashboard when under the bonnet. I have always used the bikes own tachometer and never had an issue.

I actually manged to synch my carbs with the tank tilted but still connected. Just requires the correct length screwdriver.

I didn't think it was possible to get to the pilot air screws with the airbox in.
The pilot screws on the 93 are on the bottom of the carb bodies pointing toward the engine. Is there a special tool to reach them with the box in?

Nope - have to do them with the airbox off, and then refit airbox for vacuum settings as far as I know. Sh1tty fiddly job. 21/2 turns out is pretty std though, according to the book......

Glad my pilot screws are horizontal. Have you blokes tried to make a bent screwdriver? Mine is probably too short but they are easy to make. Once the pilot screws are set though they should never need touching. Car dwell gauges usually don't fit bikes due to a different ignition system so no need to use that. Other than a set of 4 gauges no special tools required. I'll be doing a how to in the next day or so. I'll let people know when it's done.

I'm with bluebeard here - so glad my pilot screws are horizontal and accessible from the side.
