what about piaa's same or better then silverstars?

 

they're all about the same mang...
as far as HIDs, yes, i lights up everything, but you also have to know that it's white light...and the reason it has to be so bright is because white light on black asphalt absolutely sucks...yellow light is absolutely awesome on asphalt, as you get great contrast, etc...but only thing is that it doesn't travel very far...so the it would be best to have HID high and yellow bulb low so you can see what's fairly close to you in good detail AND what's coming up.

 

The link posted also sells HID's with a golden yellow tint, so, it is still HID being bright as he!! and, still offeres the yellow ability to see right infront of you. Price is up there, but, thier kit is completly waterproof, not so of the $140 kits. I'm looking more into em now

I love my hid. I only have one because two will tan people in front of you.I made it my high beam so I can turn it off/on . Smokey don't like bright lights in his rear view. I hve an 6rr so I put the amp in the tail. No one knows about so no one just your Hid just take your whole bike. It probably looks nicer with two but you only need one. I'll try to post you some pics.

 

I have a question for you guys... don't our lowbeams (at least in an F3) run all the time? If yes, are they always running at the full 55W or are they similar to daytime running lights in cars and only run an a reduced wattage?

If they run at a reduced wattage, I'd think it's bad for the HID. It should run at full power or no power, anything else is unreliable and will probably be detrimental to the ballast and/or bulb. Additionally, I've also heard that yellow lighting provides better contrast on the road (read: depth perception). A member on these boards makes updated front ends for the F3 that includes ellipsoidal headlights which include "yellow" lights for better contrast. Anyway, if that's the case, then HID may be a bad idea in a bike...?

Now, all that being said, I have a lot of experience with HID in cars... I wouldn't run any car without it. I've had the best experience in quality from xenondepot and it just so happens that they have a kit specifically for motorcycles (1 bike-specific ballast/bulb). They use only Phillips components... ask anyone with experience and they'll tell you that Phillips and Osram are the best HID components, period.

I was reading about HIDs on a Japanese site where it has all the detail and it said turning HID on/off quickly will damage the ballast or ignitor, can't remember which. On my F4i, the high/low beam will turn off when I push start buttom and worry that it will cause any damage to HIDs eventually. Will it realy damage the HID or I should not worry about it since it is only one time on/off/on.

 

zero - according to the above site these HID's have a protection circuit that avoids this issue. Other cheaper versions don't.

I do have a question though - if you wanted to replace both both lights you would have to purchase two of them right?

So for my 02 600 F4i that would be $478? ouch....

 

i wouldn't get HID information from a site that sells HIDs, but rather from other sources that will state pros and cons mang...

 

H.I.D is deffinetly the way to go if your worried about seeing at night or having people see you. I've had H.I.D in every car that i've owned and the difference is unbelievable. Here's some facts about H.I.D:

It uses less wattage, only 35 watts compared to halogens 55 watts.

H.I.D color is measured in kelvin tempature. The higher the Tempature the less light the H.I.D puts out. pretty much the bightest kit you can get would be between 4300k and 5000k and its a pure white light. As the kelvin tempature goes up so does the color. at 6000k the color starts to get a purpleish whit tint. 8000k the light is a nice purple color and anything over that ie. 10000k and 12000k will be a bright bright blue but it doesn't put any more light on the road than stock hologens. So if you want the best light out put don't buy anything over 6000k.

The amount of light that actually gets put on the road is measured in lumens. A stock halogen bulb ranges from 2600 to 2800 lumens. I believe that silverstars have reached about 3000 lumens and maybe some piaa bulbs as well. H.I.D is about 3200 lumens or a little more. The % of light put on the road is much much more with the H.I.D.

Turning the lights on and off quickly is not good for the bulb or the ballast. The light requires a warm up time so if you flicker it, it disrupts the process and can damage the ballasts. I'm not sure about the high end kits with the protection circut, i've never heard of it but it doesn't mean it's not there.

Another good thing about the H.I.D's are that they should last about 300 times longer than halogen bulbs. The Average halogen bulb last about 6,000 to 8,000 hours whereas the H.I.D bulbs last about 22,000 hours because there is no filiment to burn out like in halogens, instead H.I.D uses a combination of xenon gas and sulferic chemicals to burn inside the bulb tube. However if one does burn out its quite expensive to replace, about $100.

ALL aftermarket H.I.D kits are illegal however unless they are going into a car or bike that was originally set up for H.I.D. Halogen headlight reflectors arent meant to have that many lumens be distibuted through the reflector so in turn it causes hot spots, areas where there is more light than intended in one are and it blinds oncoming drivers. Projector lights are great for H.I.D because it distributes the light evenly on the road and makes a sharp cut-off line so as to not blind other drivers.

If anyone has any other questions about H.I.D please feel free to ask me, i've researched it extensivly in the last 2 years. If im gonna spend $500 on lights for my car I want to make sure i know what i'm getting and how they work, lol.
