New bike or Rebuild old bike?

New bike or Rebuild old bike?
I can get a clean 2004 CBR 1000 with 40,000 miles for about $4,500. Would it be worth the money to do a basic rebuild, and how many miles can a stock bike run? I found a big bore piston kit for just under $500. I'm assuming i would also need new rods, main, gaskets, clutch and what ever else. Any advice or links to a motor rebuild kit would be appreciated.

It would certainly be worth it. I know of several bikes with 80,000+ miles on them. As long as you take care of 'em, they'll last for a very long time. When you say "I'm assuming I'll need new rods,...", are you talking about actual rods or just bearings? 'Cause certainly if you're only doing a big bore kit then you don't need new rods, but I would go ahead and replace crank and rod bearings and the clutch pack. I would also replace valve seals while you're in the engine. And when you take the rods apart, make sure you buy new rod bolts. These bolts are designed to be installed and torqued to a certain stretch point to give them the optimum strenth. When you re-use these bolts, you run the risk of using a fatigued bolt and possibly shearing one of them, which would obviously lead to some catastrophic problems. I'm pretty sure you can get most, if not all, of the gaskets from a dealer in one kit. I know you can for the older bikes.

Yes i was thinking i also needed to replace the rods but i guess your right they should be stong enough. I definitely don't want to spend any more money then needed. Thanks for you help zerochickenstrips. I hope with the 3mm over bore it will smoke a new 07 bike or al least hang with it.
