Crank making a noise
After opening up the engine it was discovered that one of the connecting rods had broken and came off the shaft.
thankfully no apparent danger to the other parts...
what could be done to repair the engine or which part would be needed so that i can ride again?
and what might have caused this damage? so that i can avoid this in the future... please help! missing riding alot

Look closer for other damage. If the conecting rod came off the crankshaft, be certain there is other damage. Even a scratch on the crank is enough to cause problems, not to mention what a few extra millimeters of piston travel can do to a valve train. Check again. If you are not sure, get the parts to a machine shop so the can check it out, and hopefully fix the damage. Best case, you will need a new rod and bearings, but it may be better to look for another motor.

What were you doing at the time said engine calamity happened?
This is the kind of story that sends shivers up my spine.
A con rod coming off the crank is like..... the titanic sinking, unless you were thrashing the living daylights of of her round a track...... but even then...... blimey.
C'mon man. Spill the beans. What's the story?

yup,i'm with them, no way you threw a rod and didn't do anything to the crank! and you didn't do anything to the case, either? - that would be lucky. look in the bottom of the oil pan to see how much debris (metal shavings) is in there.
you'd need another rod, then you'd need new bearings all around, head gasket, hone/hatch, wristpins, and new rings IF nothing is wrong with the crank and a lot of metal didn't go through the motor
