Hi, I'm a new member here. I posted on the new member forum but it hasn't posted yet. I just picked up an 88 1000f and want to buy a service manual. I prefer to have a hard copy rather than an electronic one. In that I only want to buy one I'm wondering which is the better, the factory or the Haynes. And does Chilton make one? Thanks for any info.

 

imo, factory manual is the best.

 

If you're gonna do you own wrenching, I recommend the factory as your bible.

However, I also have the Clymer and Haynes manuals, as a cross-reference and procedure
refinement. They sometimes have a better picture or decription than the factory, that
helps you visualize and figure out a particular sticking-point.

I actually think Haines does a better job on the detail and organization vs Clymer.

Thanks for the advice, I suspected the factory would be best but I wanted to check. I have had the factory manual for the Nighthawk for years, it's the fourth one I've owned, and it's very good. Honda seems to do a good job but I worked on a Yamaha Virago a while back and had the ownner get their manual and it was writen like the early Japanese manuals ei. removel of gas tank removal of carburator et., not worth the time or money. I have never had faith in Clymer. My usual preferences are factory,Chilton, Haynes. I just was curious about this model. Thanks for the info, I'll go for the factory.

 

Update: It took quite a bit of searching but I ordered the factory manual ,new, yesterday $40.00 + $3.00 for expidited shipping seemed like a great deal. Thanks for the advice.

 

FYI ebay always has factory manuals listed. Some go for too much money, but I picked mine up for $9.95 shipped (a pawn shop of all places).

 

Thanks for the info, my new one came a while back, new and stilll in the cellophane. Fourty bucks is cheap for what Honda wanted ie: $100.oo. What kind of shape are the used ones usually in? Next time I may go for one.
