Ride in the right lane unless you are passing (or live in England).
Actually I said this. The right lane has the dangers of on / off ramps. On ramps are dangerous because many people do not know how to enter a freeway, often surging on to squeeze in behind the bumper of the lead car and in front of the trail vehicle. Or worse creep on FAR under the speed of traffic for even that lane. Off ramps have the very real danger of people cutting across your lane to exit. This is how my friend at work went down costing him a month+ in the hospital, $800k in hospital bills (thankfully he has insurance) and he still hasn't returned to work after almost 9 months.

In reality no lane is safe from some jackass going WAY over the limit and you should be checking your mirrors frequently anyways. And the left lane is usually restricted to passing only on 2 lane freeways. If there are 3 lanes and it's still restricted, I'd use the middle lane before I touched the right lane.

I only go there when I'm getting off.

by my research, 7 states have such a law (in varying flavors):
Illinois
Kansas
Kentucky
Louisianna
Maine
Massachusetts
New Jersey
Oklahoma

Some other states have very specific circumstances or conditions, but in general, if you're doing at least the speed limit and you are not obstructing traffic then there's no issue (except that maybe you are speeding )

Most states follow The Uniform Vehicle Code which actually states things from the other perspective: vehicles moving slower than the 'normal' flow of traffic shall stay to the right and all vehicles shall move right when yielding to faster traffic.

personally, i live blissfully in the left lane no matter what i'm driving, and have never caught any flack for it. the right lane(s) are always full of slow, oblivious lemmings, and frankly the ride is much smoother to the left since the big trucks aren't over there chewing up the pavement.

This is all we have in Hawaii. But I am not sure if it is a law though.

Within the lane itself, I tend to like being on right side, because if I am on middle or left, the car on right side lane may not see me in mirror. Maybe it is not a good thing.

I ride the far left lane here (Phx area). That's the HOV lane on the urban freeways, and m/cs are allowed to use the HOV lane at any/all times. I, too, much prefer to have traffic on only 1 side of me, and I don't like the on/off-ramp issues.

i'd say the left side of the lane would be a better choice when following a car, especially for a lowered bike with a vertically-challenged rider {wink} -- traffic coming the other way can see you much sooner and clearer. less likely to get someone turning left in front of you because he didn't see you following the other guy, and it should give you a better view of traffic ahead.
and don't ever hang around beside a vehicle in the lane next to you -- move ahead or behind.

and from my experience, albeit very little, the left lane seems more comfortable for me bc i'm on the drivers side when passing, and when they come up to me from behind. if I'm on thier right, they tend to not see me even though my bright white bike and bright white jacket lol.

and thanks for all the input guys

Ride to find your own cushion. Left is safer than right due to on/off ramp. Also more slower vehicle on the right. You don't ride slow on the left? Left is fast lane, you must ride faster to pass. But is some vehicle going really slow on the left, you don't pace behind them, you find you own space and pass them. Left/right does matter, just find your comfort cushion and stay away from vehicle blind spot. Don't follow a large vehicle in front that has tinted windows? You must find a lane that you can view clearly ahead. Loud pipes safes lives... revvvvv it... Let cars around you know that your their, but do not do it is a way that **** them off. Then when all is clear, no obstructed view ahead, you and your bike becomes one. You will know this is the position.
