There is always those calibers and firearms that beg the question "why" Probably the most punishing rifle I have ever shot was a .416 rigby from a 9lb rifle, no brake. ouch. Manageable, but why. The 30-06 will do-in anything on the planet with the proper load, is has before, plenty of times. Theres other hard hitting rounds suited for the big stuff, one of the more popular rounds is a 375 H&H, and it's tolerable. The X frame series handguns from Smith are not that bad really, I mean, the damn pistol weighs a ton, has a brake and so on. One of the more brutal pistols to shoot is one of the scandium airlights in a .44 mag. Better make that first shot count cause the follow-up is gonna be a bitch. All in all, I see the trend in rifles and handguns going towards bigger is better. This idea I think is to make up for shot placement and marksmanship. How many people go out and shoot regularly? A few do sure, but overwhelmingly, most folks shoot thier hunting rifle/load about a week before season once or twice and call it good, and then they wonder why they had to trail a deer or why they missed or why they didn't drop it. The answer? Lets get a whoppin new bigger ultra-mag that'll cut the animal in half! Whatever.

No way. Sorry, but if you had Norma custom form brass for you, and had Barnes make you a one of a kind bullet, I still don't see it. I reload for allot of exotic rounds and 100$ a pop is laughable. Ok, well, maybe for the first round, but 60% of that is tied up in brass, but you can reload the brass, so theres that cost out of the window. I reload for some rounds where the brass is 3$ a piece, but I get 15 or so loads out of the brass before the case neck starts splitting, so you see, it's not that expensive. The hype of 100$ a shot is more likely for the first run one-off loads and the work-up, after that, it's no more than a 50BMG.

I have an old Mosin Nagant that shoots a 7.62 x 54 and has a metal plate on the butt of the stock. If you don't hold it right it will start to hurt pretty quickly.

that says a lot about the durability of the rifle though. That thing took some kind of beating being dropped that many times!

Pretty sure it was a single shot rifle. Even if it wasn't I doubt they had multiple rounds loaded.
Most of them looked like they had never really held a gun before. With a gun like that its gotta be tight up against your shoulder with a wide one foot forward one foot back stance. On top of that it helps to lean in. I would never shoot that gun.
