That might be one of the rare instances where not having a helmet on actually saved further injury by causing his neck to be snapped back.

that happened instantly and a LOT of bikes were dumped, as i read from the article a lot of people didn't know much until the fallen bikes were too close. and as i read there were even two waves of falling bikes..
