Invest in a tank bag, That will give you the most capacity. Plus when it's full you can use it for upper-body support. Just back your change of clothes at the top to make it softer.

Doesn't hurt to get a fuel-bottle from an out-door supply shop as well, even a quart of gas can be the difference between stranded or not. Add a pair of long-under wear for both of you. Temp changes are much more significant on a bike, over the course of a full day of travel. A fist-full of zip-lock bags is a good bet for packing your clothes, etc. in, crush all of the air out to get the most from packing/re-packing during the trip as well. With google maps, plan your way-points. Don't punish yourself, by trying for more than 5-6 hundred miles a day in the plan stage. 2-up distance riding is harder on the body, than the equivalent car miles. Frequent stops to stretch will burn a lot of time.

Good luck, be safe, Ern

Great advice MadHattr059, i have a marsee 50L bag on a ventura rack, plus saddle bags and i have a tank bag but it has a space on top for my iphone, a speaker and amp built in and a little storage inside, i mostly use it for the quick things i might need like cigs, sunglasses, gum etc. Will do on the fuel bottle (got stuck in an indian reservation leaving on a trip, while waiting for tow truck with gas, g/f tipped over the bike breaking mirror and brake, short trip lol). How about tools, and safety stuff?

dont forget water. i use a camelback pack with a water tube that i can slip into my helmet to sip on water. it helps keep the mouth moist, not to mention for use as spare water for the radiator and cleaning shields. also, have toilet paper. nothing worse than...well you can guess. tools, your bike should have a tool kit anyway. bring anything extra that you would know how to use. a cell phone is usually the best tool for most. flashlight and a candle. if you get stuck, a simple candle becomes very useful. i always ride with a tire plug kit in my bike. a tire plug can be a temporary fix until the next place to get a tire. a small compact bicycle pump is good enough in a pinch.
dont forget the camera. document your voyage and post it up!

if your gonna stay awhile, overnight your luggage and stuff to the hotel so it arrives before you do. the hotel should accept it if you work it out ahead of time. then mail it back. travel light and efficient.

Tools? Well, yeah. That's part of the SOP for the bike. Spare fuses, flashlight, first-aid
kit, weather-radio, another flashlight (smaller keychain-type). A couple of chem-lights
for road-side flares (or that cool camp-out, lol).

Follow up on Gotcbr's post, this ain't his first rodeo.

Far as the first aid kit, Get some kind of shell, then be sure it has ...
a couple of pairs of latex gloves, You don't always know when treating strangers,
Beware of blood-transmitted diseases, with gloves you won't have to hesitate.
a can of spray skin, the best answer to road-rash yet invented.
A couple of maxi-pads, these are the best thing for open wounds.
Designed to absorb and clot blood.
Several rolls of 2" guaze, some 4" guaze pads, some flex-tape wrap
A few alcohol wipes are good to have also.

By the way, those latex gloves? In a pinch they'll make good glove liners.

If you are thinking about 2-up as a regular thing, invest in the blue-tooth intercom
sets. It's, literally, like talking in a room with the passenger. Crystal-clear, and
you can pipe music in, too. That can go a long way to making it a cool ride.

Great stuff 74Demon,thanks. I would have never thought 0f the candle. and a pump also good idea. I got tools and a tire patch, and in the marsee bag i keep a small cooler with the essentials (water, redbull, corona) and some snacks. We plan on spending 3 days or so but while a great idea, i think over nighting the stuff would get expensive and risky in case it doesnt get there (we're screwed). The toilet paper... well what can i say, i guess you don't think of it until it happens huh?

Yeah, im sure too. i have done as far as 12 hour rides each way on the bike, this will be more like 18-20. But you can never be too prepared and its always good to hear from other road warriors. I have a Gopro and a digital camera im taking, i will be sure to post pics, and if this forum allows a vid or too.

Great to know the forum has my back.
Any more suggestions or tips, feel free...
