I give my wife my older helmets and they're full face helmets. She rides with me once in a while but a full face is the way to go. An open face just doesn't give you the protection. However, I wouldn't pay a high end helmet either. There are good helmets out there for 100 - 200 range. It'll depend on the brand, graphics, and weight. Some of the brands would be likeHJC, AGV, KBC and some others. Just got to look. If your buying a new bike from a dealership or even a bike shop, some dealers throw in helmets as part of the deal. Most importantly just make sure the fitting is right.

I just went to Walmart and got a $70 Bell full face. It is still DOT approved and actually breathes well. Wouldn't it suck if you messed up your girls face because you went for a cheap skull cap and wrecked? Thats just my .2

Go shopping with her so she can pick one out that she will like and that will fit her like a helmet should fit anyone. She can also get the graphics on the helmet she will like that way she can be happy everytime she gets on the bike. She will also not be mad at you for getting her a helmet that is loose and ugly and clashes with her outfit. Much better for you if she gets her own helmet and gear so she can be safe.
