RE: American Made twin 650. mmmm
Sorry to resurect an old thread...but I just can't help it.
I would hardly call it American made....almost all parts are off-shore sourced...save the frame and gas tank. Its assembled and some parts are "fitted" here....so partlya worth while effort. But a Honda Goldwing is just as American as this thing, if not more so as Honda does a great deal of dometic sourcing. You could also argue that the profit stays here, and I'm for that, but he's being very misleading.
And for the price....an F4i is only $500 more list price and arguably a much better bike....and to boot, my local dealer has 06 F4i's left over for under $7000 out the door. The Fisher's Ohlins shock in back is a big difference, though not enough for me...I can get an Elka, Foxor Penske shock for $800.
$700 for a brembo brake package....no great deal there as Nissan stuff is not garbage anyway. $4999 for wheels that are still cast, the over priced brake package and ohlins forks.
He did get some significant outside engineering help...but does anyone really think they could do better than the army of engineers Honda, Kawi, Yam or Suz have...let alone the 30 years of expereince they all have in bikes...not to mention other vehicles.
Bang for the buck its a long shot. Coolness factor...yeah, definately. Is being assembled here worth something, yes. Jay Leno might buy one just to have in his collection....but they will never be worth anything. I also question if he'll be here in two years....if he is great, its a free country. But, the big four will find any patents he's infringed on and start suing him daily.
