1 2 or 3 GB.....thats a pretty wide choice...i'll stick to my linux on 512 running smoother and faster than i have ever seen vista run
1 is a min, 2 or 3 is preferred  my BSD box has 1.5GB n hasnt ever had a issue

My laptop runs with the XP pro and the wifey's is with the Vista Home. I really want to think that Vista is really a good OS that can super seed the XP in the future but I can't. Even with 2GB Ram the start up is l.ike forever, opening any files is same too. Too heavy I guess.

No, when XP came out...people did whine...but i ran XP myself on 64mb of RAM for 6 months....vista on even the recommended amount SUCKS worse than that
XP blows with 512MB of RAM, I remember when I first got XP I had 256MB of RAM and it sucked. and the recommended amount on any Windows OS is ridiculous, you should always double it. I couldnt imagaine the time it would take to open programs with 64MB of RAM, I found a comp at work the other day that had 128MB of RAM and it took forever to run anything, or to even switch windows.

My wife's laptop has 2GB of RAM and it runs great. it came with 1GB and it was ok, but adding another Gig really helped out.
