Man... I knew this guy! Dan was my dads neighbor... my dad lives in a 2 unit duplex and he lives in one side, and Dan and another guy lived in the other side. They've been living there next to each other for a few years now. Really nice guy... I didn't know him super well, but he always said hi and talked to me a few minutes whenever I went over to my dads place. Kinda suprises me... this guy was a very experienced boater, he was ALWAYS out on it fishing any chance he had. But I guess anything can happen, especially when you're alone.... sucks
RIP Dan
Body Of Missing Boater Found In Biscayne Bay BISCAYNE BAY (CBS4) ― The body of a missing boater has been found in Biscayne Bay.
The body of Dan Stonionis, 45, was discovered by a passing boater Tuesday morning, who quickly called the U.S. Coast Guard.
The body was found off the coast of Sands Key, about 3 miles east of Fowey Rocks Light.
The Coast Guard was called to the scene to retrieve the body.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman Jorge Pino confirmed that it is Stonionis, who disappeared from his boat off Eliott Key on Saturday.
Coast Guard crews began searching for Stonionis after his empty but still running boat was discovered by two good Samaritans. The good Samaritans managed to stop the vessel. After boarding it, they found a cell phone, called the last number dialed and spoke with a person claiming to be Stonionis' father.
Search and rescue crews searched more than 3,000 square miles for almost three days in an effort to locate Stonionis.
"The family and friends of Stonionis have our deepest sympathies," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Stephanie Strivens, a Coast Guard District Seven search-and-rescue controller. "After almost three days of searching we had the greatest hope of finding Stonionis alive. We are saddened that was not the case this time."
