Default Next Bike Insight

Alright well my F2 has been down for some time now and will be finished before riding season hopefully. There is no way on god's green earth I am going to get rid of it. It is my baby. Since the VA finally started paying me to go to school, I was thinking about saving a few and getting a new bike (new to me). I was thinking about getting a 00-05 600rr, 929, 954 or RC51. 3 of the 4 are no longer produced which is a parts issue that does not bother me at all. I own a F2 so no big deal.

I would like yours guys/gals insight on this. Pros and Cons

Thanks,
Justin

Granted i am biased of course. That said for me i ride a friends 07 600RR quite regularly, i dont like it at all. Its uncomfortable and has no, well ***** lol. The rc51 is a fun bike, im not personally a fan of the v twin but you may like it. So that leaves the 929 and 954, 929 you may find cheaper, but the 54 is the better of the 2 bikes imo.

Take this with a grain of salt since I haven't ridden any of those, but I was in a similar dilemma between the 929/954/RC51. I talked to the owner of a shop and got his advice on the issue, he said that my choices were actually a later model '97-'98 900RR and 954. He said to skip the 929 due to various maintnence and riding issues and skip the RC51 purely because of how difficult parts for it would be as well as fuel economy. At the end of the day, I got a '01 R1 because I found a nice one.

If you don't mind a rough ride, budget/parts aren't that big of an issue and you aren't strict about having an I-4 engine note, my vote goes to that RC51, when it was made it was like a $30k bike and is pretty much a race replica with some of Honda's finest engineering works going into it.

As far as the 600rr option, I'm thinking of buying a 600rr just because once I get settled back in the US, I want a track tool that's gonna be easy on the insurance as well as a bike that can be mor easily thrown around a track. And despite all the lazy shifters that seem to be forum junkies, I like the idea that I can't simply get away with accidentally being in the wrong gear and being able to save the corner and that hard work (if you can call riding "work" :lol will pay off. I'm not too sure about those literbikes you're looking at, but they might come with slipper clutches, which the 600rr definitely does not... another thing to consider.

Like I said, grain of salt, I didn't even end up on a Honda for now, anyways.

Insight? Ok, insight it is! ;-D I have an F4 (600cc) & an RC51(1000cc). Both are very different beasts.

The 600 is great for all around riding...city, commuting, twisties, & track. The gas mileage is excellent (170 mi per tank). The 600 will be more than enough adequate power for your needs, will have better ergos than the RC51, will be lighter, insurance will be less expensive. All that being said, it doesn't have the jolt & availability of more raw power that the RC51 (or other of your possibilities) has.

The RC51 is a very unique vtwin sport bike. It has a mystique that can't be denied. It was a world champion racing bike. It was built as a racer. It sits like a racer. Most think its not even remotely comfortable...especially on longer rides (I like it fine though). Speaking of longer rides, it will cost you big in gas. 120mi (or less) & you're looking for a gas station. When an RC51 says its thirsty, it means it! ;-) Insurance will be much more than a 600. It is a heavy bike. Commuting can be a chore w/a bike of this weight if you're used to a 600. The torque is all its own...its simply, well...a beast! The RC51 is not forgiving at all. You must be experienced to ride it. Not trying to shy you away from it...just saying that the RC51 *must* be respected. Can you grow into it? Well, sure, you'd just better have the experience...& lots of it to take over riding an RC. It can get away from you fast! Pardon the pun. ;-D

The RC51 is a dinosaur compared to other liter bike offerings today but it still gets the respect it deserves. Its a great bike w/a rumble that no other bike quite has. The feel of power from my RC51 just makes my heart pump! I love my retro racer.

Ironically, I just looked at an '04 RC51 Nicky Hayden Edition w/ 3400 mi (yes, only 3400 mi) for $6800. The RC51's, although no longer produced, hold value very nicely...especially if they're taken care of. I'm not worried about finding parts...factory Honda still stocks parts for it all the way back to the first yr or production - 2000. Also, there are internet forums/boards for it, just like this one for CBRs...help is just a click away. ;-)

I find it refreshing to swap up btwn my 600 & my RC51. However, I mainly use my 600 as a daily-rider b/c its cheaper to operate, easier to flick around, & runs cooler in city/commuting type of riding. FYI, I use 87 octane in my 600 & 91 octane in my RC51.

Ultimately, I think you'll be happy w/ any of the choices. Its just a matter of where your heart & priorities lie (ok, wallet too). If I can be of any more help w/ insight on the RC51, please feel free to contact me.

Happy shopping!

Well I have ridden a friends 600rr, Didn’t really like it compared my 954. no torque down low. Couldn’t tell a big difference in handling. RC51s are going to be kind of pricey and generally have at least 10k in miles as well as being uncomfortable.. (I have only been on the RC 1 time). In 2000 or 2001 they compared it to the 929 and they were pretty equal, on the track for the most part. That leaves me with the 954rr, which for a sport bike to me is ridiculously comfortable and faster than the 600, 900, 929, and RC51, and not to mention it is the lightweight in the class as well. Even compared to the 600rr of the same year (same dry weight, a lot more hp and tq). I’d choose the 954, you can get a NICE 954 with low miles from 3500 to 4500.
