If I can share any advice learned from my experience...it would be this. Whatever you do, do NOT let her keep your heart on a chain. If you let her string you along, she'll get what she wants without you ever getting what you want. She wants your compassion, your listening, your caring, and your attention. If she gets all that for free, what reason does she have to ever come back to you?
The Funny thing about women is that they love it when you dig deep and be a man. I dated this girl for 2 years, and I was completely into her. We were together all the time and everything. I moved away for a year and like 6 months into it she broke up with me, but told me she "wanted to get back together sometime." I let that keep me going for over a year, still treating her like we were together but getting nothing back. Then, I finally got depressed enough and fed up enough that I basically told her that if she wanted to be with me, great, but I wasn't going to be dragged across the rocks anymore. What do you know, the next day, she wants me more than ever. She did end up coming back to me, but only after I proved that I wasn't gonna lay down anymore.
To answer your question, I'd say buy her the bday present, but nothing big. Buy her a present on par with what you'd buy one of your friends, not something you'd buy a girlfriend, and come clean about it. If you keep treating her like she's your girlfriend, or even kind of like that, she won't likely be back. You can still talk, but make her just a normal aquaintance in your head. One of the toughest things I've ever had to do man, but it worked.
Good luck
