Hey all i need some advice about a ride im wanting to do. I live in St. Paul MN and planning on riding north to Duluth. Its about 200 miles or so but thats not the problem. The problem is it has a 40% chance of rain and the weather is going to be mid 60's for the high. So ive never had a problem riding in the rain so not a huge deal but my question is will those conditions effect the big in a huge way?

 

If you're confident in your handling on wet conditions, the point of concern will be you yourself. Wet + lower temperature will have effects on your body.

Got good rain gear? Try to keep the rain from reaching skin level and you should be alright for the most part. If not, look for places to stop along the route to dry out a bit.

 

Quite simply, rain gear. I have no doubt in my abilities in any weather conditions (i know to stay inside when it is icing, now) but when im wet, I shiver and become a less effective rider. Either a cheap rain poncho with elastics for outside your gear, or a nice suit for the rain and some cover for your gloves.

Can't go wrong there! Even some links to glove covers below. If you wanna ride all the time, rain or shine, rain gear makes sense.

If your fairly certain of rain, try to plan out some points along the way that you can take shelter in. Theres nothing worse than being stuck in a downpoor and not knowing where to go.

Also, keep in mind of other drivers. rain doesnt affect cars nearly as much so they don't slow down like you may. Plus, the visibility is going to be worse, especially when cars are passing you and kicking up the dirty water off the road. I've never used them, but they make a squeegy that mounts on the back of your glove so you can wipe off your visor. I think they were made for snowmobiles, but could work in a situation like this as well. I know I could have used one last time I was caught in the rain. Make sure you bring a clear visor. tinted visors and rain do not mix well.

Do what ever you can to keep your feet and hands dry and warm. Once either gets cold, it takes along time to warm them back up. Not to mention the danger factor of not being able to feel. It takes alot more feel in the rain, so thats one thing you don't want to have less of.
