My lady put Unleaded Gas in the TDI (Diesel Fuel).....
Our Toronado with GM's 5.7 diesel engine met it's end that way. We had given it to our son while he was in the service. He loaned it to a friend who put 18 gallons of unleaded in it, then took off down the road. Apparently the engine made all kinds of loud noises then stopped running just a couple miles down the road.
Our son had it towed to the base. When he tried to start the car he said the starter just spun free, as if it wasn't connected to anything. Most likely it wasn't.
His 'friend' never reimbursed him for the damage, and the car ended up in a bone yard.
Hope your VW didn't meet the same fate.

Nate - since its an 01 and an older style of the VW diesel engine, you should be able to get away with pulling all the fuel out of the tank, fushing on the lines, and replacing the fuel filter, after that, it will need to be ran to clear out any remaining gasoline out of the injection pump underhood(after fuel filter). i have never seen one come in that caused any sort of pump/engine damage. couple hours labor, a filter, and a fresh tank of good diesel and you will be back on the road.
crom from a certified diesel engine mechanic with the army and my knowlege of gasoline motors aswell.. it's really an easy fix and if you were anywhere near me i would lend a hand and have it up and running in an hour..
drop tank run 12v to fuel pump, disconnect return line and run to bucket, (empty tank), fill with diesel, mount tank, pull injectors, purge with diesel fuel until popping pressure a few times, 12v to glow plugs for apx. 10-15 min. crank until start.. idle for an hour or so to make sure all unleaded fuel is pumped through.. then drive like you're breaking in a new motor.. it sounds like alot but it really isnt as i've done it on a vw before as well as a f350 that got kerosene in the tank.. the hardest part is really just getting it started..

Hate to say this but a 2011 diesel VW will be commonrail ,electronic highpressure(15000 to 20000psi )injection so having had petrol into the pump has almost certainly munted the pump. The modern common rail diesels are super sensitive to fuel quality which is why they use 2 micron fuel filters rather than 10 micron filters as used on the more conventional pressure injection systems which utilise sequential injection pumps. Petrol into a diesel is usually a recipe for disaster depending on the mix ratio any more than 25% petrol is pretty much terminal. Diesel into a petrol engine just makes it run like a 2 stroke up to about 25% over that they dont run real well if at all however drain and refill with petrol is normally all that is required, the petrol type injection pumps dont run vrey high pressures compared to diesel as most inject into intake ports rather than directly into the combustion chamber as is the case with the diesel.
After all that lets hope the prognosis is not too bad in your case.
