Murphy was not a grunt. He was a Captain in the US Air Force. The term was coined after test piloting a new aircraft. The crew had the control panels wired exactly backwards. When Murphy managed to land the jet he said, "whatever can happen, will happen."
The crew took note. Murphy's Law was born.

Apparently I got a construed story as well.
Murphy was a scientist. His assistant wired the panel backwards and it was a chimp in a g-force simulator, not a jet.
I read that story in Readers Digest years ago. I'm writing them right now. Bastards.
