OMG, did I hear that right ..you are deciding between a Harley or a Ducati?? ..lol

Anyway I think you nailed the issue here, if you can afford the bike ..its like who buys a Ferrari and whinges about the running costs ... ok bikes are cheaper but you know what I mean, I just think its hard to beat a 600 for eveyday and Ducati for *that* special day :-)

I've got 4 bikes and a Yamaha Vino already, so it's not like I'm trading in anything. Looking at the Harely cause its got it's own thing going, maybe the same "thing" that many here hate, but still, theres nothing like them. So trying to decide between a road king for the days my wife want to ride with me, so comfort all day and cruising is a breeze. Then I think, how much does she really ride with me, so then I get thinking about a nightster or one of the cross bones bikes, hell, if I'm going for personal enjoyment, why not an old rigid, maybe a norton or old school BSA? But then theres the Ducatti Hyper Motard, man thats a sic bike, tons of fun to be had there.......choices choices. Don't get me wrong, I love my sportbikes, but if you ride all year long, take trips and go everywhere on two wheels, its allot nicer when you have a choice. I mean, you don't play 18 holes of golf with one club right?

Yea, dude didn't exactly wear the pants around his place too much, didn't really get out much, and then there was the "I don't like to ride in the rain" excuse. Thats fine if you live in arizona or SoCal, but this was Seattle, you either ride in the rain or you don't ride for 9mo out of the year. Always tried to get him out, invite him on rides and such but he always had something to do. I think he liked being a motorcycle owner as opposed to a rider. Just my speculation of coarse.

Its ok shock, half the time I am playing with people ..lol .. one of my brothers once had a Harley and I teased him to death but as far as I was concerned he was another biker too ..his choice in bike is/was a non issue .. I dont judge anyone by what they ride or drive ..we all often get caught up in vehicle snobbery ..its all good :-)

Amen. My pop rides a Harley and it suits him so damn fine.

I can say honestly that I wouldn't trade my 954 for another bike in the world unless I could sell that new bike to get my bike back and have extra money on the side. It's absolutely perfect for me.

The newer duc's require half the maintenance. That was a big downfall of the Duc, but kinda like moaning about maintenance on a High-end sports cars, if you can afford the bike, then you can afford the work on it. Thats what my dealer says. They deal in Ducatti and say the maintenance issue kept many away. I can appreciate Ducattis, they are a fine fine machine, I don't think their fit and finish, detail can be matched, but, thats what your paying for, a fine italian bike. I'm going to be getting another bike within the next year, and trying to decide on either a Harley or a Ducatti. I'm keeping my other bikes also so don't worry.
The newer duc's have 50% off on maintenance...not 50% of the maintenance.

I would totally own a trick harley if I had the room for it. I'd own a Busa too. I have to respect my wifes desire to keep her stuff in the garage too, and I have woodworking I do that takes up space.

I have a couple of friends (4 of them actually) riding the pre 2000 ducs; the 916 model and I don't find any maintenance issue with their bikes. Most probably slight lower in terms of power and torque compare to my 900 but definitely the V twin is a blast in the curves. What makes me sweat should be their technology; single swing arm, dry clutch system and fuel injection to name a few.

I will stick with my Honda. I was possibly looking at getting a 600rr or Interceptor at the end of this IN riding season. I need to go ride a 600rr and Interceptor before I make a decision though.
