The distance between me and the car next to me is now reduced by the splitter's size. If that idiot in the car does something moronic, like intentionally crowd the rider cause he's pissed, it's up to me to keep the rider alive with almost no time to react. Nevermind here in Philly people seem to have a severe phobia for driving on the outer edges of the lanes so they crowd the center line.

Add to that the unpredictable nature of someone who splits lanes in a state where it's illegal. They split the lane already so what else are they gonna do? Are they gonna gun it when the light drops? Who's lane are they gonna cut into? What if something goes wrong when the light goes green? I've got a highly vulnerable body entirely too close to my fender whose mind I can't read and whose skills are unknown.

And yeah the splitter pisses me off for several reason. The act of splitting lanes is essentially saying that its more important that they get to their destination than it is for me to get to mine. Many are squids, just doing it so they can show off how fast they can go on a bike. Some are really stupid squids, prepping to pull an asinine wheelie off the light.

So yeah, I hate lane splitters. Lucky for them I ride and won't do to them something I wouldn't want done to me
Well to me lane splitting is done at lights or in heavy bumper to bumper traffic, yanno low speed 10 - 20mph max. That at speed bs is illegal EVERYWHERE n very unsafe n stupid. IMO if you buzz by a cager @ say 60+ n startle them n they swere n hit you n cause you to crash its YOUR fault!!! Not aimed at anyone in particular tho lol just saying.

At lights n heavy traffic its like you said, like its more important they get to thier destination than it is mine which is BS, get in line n wait like everyone else mfer lol

What's more disturbing is that people split lanes in cars here too. Washington Avenue is a wide street. 2 lanes with parallel parking on both sides and a center no man's land (painted off but not barricaded). People will try to squeeze down between the right hand lane and parked cars cause of that Philly phobia I mentioned

I just can't see a use for it. Even if I were stuck in a traffic jam on I95 I wouldn't do it. It'd be easier and safer to hop into the breakdown lane and exit the freeway.... like everyone else does as soon as the exit comes into sight

yea if I was on the interstate stuck in traffic n a off-ramp was insight I would ride down the emergency lane to get to the exit. But that still fits in the 20mph or under range too

I currently live in a state where lane-sharing/splitting is *legal*.

I have no problem w/ it as long as its done legally, w/ respect, safety, & courtesy. Then again, this goes for automobile drivers as well w/ their driving in any environment.

One of my regular routes is a 40+ mile stretch of interstate that is bumper to bumper every day during rush hr. To sit in this long line of cars that goes on forever, not only overheats my bike but is bad for my lungs as well. This is simply & absolutely unnecessary to sit in this bumper to bumper - snails pace traffic - for 2 hrs, when I can safely split the lane to continue moving to my destination.

The problems occur when the conditions I mention above in bold print, are not followed by idiot riders.

As for the original OP's remarks... don't worry about what others on the road think of you. Just follow the law & ride safely.

I found a loud exhaust will often change the way the cars around you behave.

I've found that any car at any given moment can turn against you. The worst Ive had to face was being pushed onto the kerb by some nutter and people switching lanes without looking. What also worries me is the inexperienced riders on ****ty 125's that dont have the power or expierence to safely get out of a bad situation safely.

If it wasnt for the sheer speed these bikes can accelerate I wouldnt feel that safe riding one. How odd does that sound? lol

I hate to say it but I'm sure there were times that I did the same thing before I ever got on a bike. Now I'm very careful about how close I am, and I don't care if they are two blocks away, I'll wait till they pass to pull out anywhere.

As far as lane splitting, I've never seen it around here, as far as I know my boyfriend's never done it and he sure as heck hasn't done it with me on the back, and I don't plan on ever doing it when I'm riding on my own, whether legal or not... but I was in Chicago once a couple years ago and a couple bikes went by. I was nervous for them!

I agree lane splitting is dangerous but I think jealousy would be the only reason anyone would hate you for it but like raylee said your way faster than a car so theyll be a distant memory soon enough and you can go on with your life as long as your not riding like an idiot screw everyone else

I have been on my bike waiting in traffic and had someone split the lane and go right by me.. yeah it is illegal here too.. that causes resentment from cagers.. When someone hears I ride they say "those motorcycles.. they are crazy".. there are some asshats out there, but many more of them are driving minivans and SUVs.. yet the dont get the connotation...

The only valid argument for lane splitting in slow traffic is that it reduces the chances of being rear ended by someone that isnt paying attention to stopped traffic.. but then you have to deal with car doors, lane changes, etc..

bottom line.. cagers won't like you for the most part.. they wont see you or hear you anyway either.. anything that you do that might be percieved as 'bad' will be magnified 10x because you are on two wheels.

Stay safe out there.
