Death Magnetic
Ok...gave it my first listen...and I have to say...THIS IS SOME SICK *** SH*T!
The riffs really take it back to the "Master of Puppets" days, and I don't say "...And Justice for All" because the bass makes a real presence on this album. +1 to Rob Trujillo. He's no Cliff, but he kicks Jason Newsted's *** fo sho! Also, it sounds like they are back to standard guitar tuning instead of the half step down tuning they used from "Load" on...I think they even went a full step on St. Anger. James vocals aren't what they used to be, but they sound way better than St. Anger and more "Black Album" like.
Overall, I am pleasantly surprised...Even though the guitars have a bit of a new school feel to them, it's the right mix of old school Metallica to make them a band worth listening to for the first time in nearly 20 years. In other words, they sound like Metallica again. Not I didn't dig some of the songs off the "in between" albums as I will refer to them from now on, but it just sounded too mainstream. AND THANK GOD that Kirk is playing solos again. What a waste of talent that was.
Fast riffs...constant tempo changes...blistering solos...Metallica is back people.

I got to listen to the entire album twice last week, and it rocks. It is definately the best they have done since before the black album. everything after black was weak and I couldnt stand it. I still listen to kill em all, lightning, master, justice on a weekly basis, and they are going back to their roots on this new album. dont misunderstand, its not hardcore metal like in the old days, but it is a hell of alot closer than this weak crap they been putting out for the last 15yrs or so
I guess if I werent actually alive and old enough to go their concerts back in the 80's I would have to agree with you.
Everything they have put out in almost 20yrs, now that I think about it, did suck.
but I remember back to Garage Days, and Kill em All, andsongs such "am I evil" the four horseman, or anyone rember ...base solo take....or maybe smokin a little potand listnening to the call of Ktulu. ahh, the days of a wasted youth..

^Going to give some of their new songs a listen tonight hopefully. I honestly didn't give St. Anger a chance, but hope this new album will get back to some of their real talent.
St Anger sucked so bad, and although a lot of people didn't like the S&M albums...I jammed those for a while...especially there version of Bleeding Me...
I tend to enjoy the progression bands go thru as they age...kick *** when they are youthful and then get softer and try new music as they progress...Metallica is one band that has pulled it off pretty well, although St Anger was terrible but the Black Album was great, while you have bands like Pearl Jam that can't progress even though they try. Led Zeppelin was the greatest at this, and that's why they have to be hands down the best band of all time.
Another new album that is AWESOME... Slipknot's new one...All Hope IS Gone... it's a must own, and if you purchase it, get the limited edition release that has the 3 extra tracks (one is a remake of Vermillion Pt2)and bonus DVD in it, well worth the extra $5...

That new song the day that never came or w/e it is called is awful. I can't hear the guitar because some old guy is losing his voice at the same time. I am happy with their older stuff and leave it at that. Stop trying to re-live the glory days all you has been musicians!
I gave St. Anger every chance in the world and every benefit of the doubt, but when it came down to it, it sounded like kids practicing for a gig at their friends graduation party.
This new stuff, on the other hand, I just can't stop listening to. I've been through the whole album about 5 or 6 times now, and I'm abso-f***ing-lutely digging it.
J, I heard the same thing about the new Slipknot, so I'm gonna get that too. I was also a very big fan of S&M...thought that was just an amazing album as well. I'm gonna place this new album at #4 on my Metallica list, which goes something like this...
1)Ride the Lightning
2) ...And Justice for All
3) Master of Puppets
4) Death Magnetic
5) Live ****: Binge & Purge
6) Kill 'Em All
7) S&M
8) Garage Inc.
9) "Black Album"
10) Load
11) Reload
12) St. Anger

That version of Seek and Destroy on Binge and Purge is just awesome...those CD's PUMP in a car with a sick sound system...as the one I have installed in my GTI. Really, sounds good... Disc #2 in that set was stuck in my CD player for at least 2 or 3 of my college years...it never got removed.
I agree with your list, but I'd put the Black Album at #4, but I have not heard all of the new album yet...maybe I'll pick it up today on the way home from work...
Maybe you shouldn't include Binge and Purge on that list, as it's a box set of all the albums released before '93...I think...but it's their first live "album" I guess...so it's ok, but there was nothing new on it at the time, right?
BTW - I saw Slipknot in Hartford with Disturbed a few weeks back...good show man! My only problem is that their sets were too short...
