Default "Dead" Threads

I was recently scolded for commenting on an "old, dead" thread that was just over a year old. Perhaps from being an inexperienced member, I thought "how do we know when not to break a sometimes ambiguous, unwritten rule", especially if a thread is still open and isn't seeking an endpoint? Then I saw this at the bottom of an "old" pentaxforums thread:

"This thread is over one year old. It is very likely that it does not need any further discussion or is outdated, and thus bumping it serves no purpose. If you still feel it is necessary to make a new reply, you may do so, however.
(check here) I am aware that this thread is rather old but I still want to make a reply."

What a nice idea!! I don't know if this would work since i'm not a moderator, but perhaps it would be better than closing individual threads considered dead. It would also possibly allow for additional useful information to be added, instead of new threads of the same topic being created.

That's a fairly current thread. We've been saying the same things. Post your suggestions in there
