It's fine if you pull a darwin, solo, but it's NOT cool to put others at risk, as well. And that IS what he's doing. By riding with him you are condoning his stupidity. Sooner or later, it WILL happen.

Don't be a part of it. Convince him, if you can, drop him if you can't.

Bit harsh. Any bad experiences you would like to share? Sounds like you might have a chip on your shoulder.

Also, if you cross the lines you suck? So if I cross the lines (or anyone in general) to pass someone I suck (besides the fact that you aren't supposed to go over a solid line)? I think you might have to realize that not every road with solid lines is a canyon road.

When solid lines are crossed is has nothing to do with not being able to stay in the lane, it's to pass someone.
However, if I WAS talking about canyon roads then it would have been a different story. Crossing the lines on that kind of road means you might collide with someone mid turn and I would feel really uncomfortable passing someone on a canyon road with blind turns everywhere.

well granted in the twisties and stuff yeah you need to stay in your lane or youre dumb or just suck. Intentionally crossing the lines doesnt mean you suck though. It still may mean youre dumb but it doesnt mean you suck. Depending on the situation it can just be poor judgement or a lapse of judgement. Theres a big difference between doing it on purpose and doing it because of a lack of skill.

Yeah, I'm not going to do that anymore though. I hate passing solid lines, didn't do it before last time I was riding with him and won't do it again unless someone is driving way under the speed limit creating a traffic jam. I already told him though so he'll probably do his regular bursts and let me catch up to him. The type of road I mention in my original post has (double lane) roundabouts every so many km and that's the place I generally overtake a bunch of cars.

I knew my post would draw some comment. Chip on my shoulder? Nope, just feel strongly about amatuer road-racers on public roads. He had already mentioned that the guy was going too fast to stay in lanes on curves. That is incompetence, in my book. I'm talking about a habital rider who appparently disregards that your mom may be coming the other way on the curves.

The start of the discussion defined the parameters, excessive speed at inappropriate places on public roads. We all cross broken lines to pass slower traffic, they are designed to indicate appropriate places to do that very thing.

Taking my comments out of these specific context, would appear to make them harsh. However, I stand by them, in the scenerio of sport riding in public. Pushing hard in the twisties, is a much more demanding task if you are limiting your path to only your side of the lines, hence my declaration that he has a lesser skill set than the guy who can maintain speed AND lane position.

I also get annoyed at the dis-service to the bike community, that his fiery demise will inspire in the general driving population. The stories about how dangerous motorcycling is, punctuated with his riding as an example of what an idiot I am for choosing to ride bikes.

(I myself am a very experienced rider. He has less time in the saddle but rides quite well too, just a little crazy sometimes. Which is what this thread is about.)

Dude, did you even bother reading my posts? HE (me) said nothing about about my buddy being too fast to stay in lanes on curves. That's all you.

Even after posting this, in which I mention I'm NOT talking about canyon roads (twisties), you still seem to be fixed on that type of curvy road.

True. However, I'm talking about a very different type of road than what you keep blabbering on about. The ONLY reason I used the words 'double yellow' is because that's the kind of road marking used in the US (and since most people that come here are US based, that's what I used) 'Solid lines' on it's own could mean anything.

Again with the twisties.. Moving on...
