CCW - What do you carry?
Nice Ruger! I prefer the bull barrels to the tapered ones. Just look much better to me.
The .243 is a great round, you're right. My grandfather had one, and I usually chose it for smaller stuff. Always used 30-06 for deer (although the .243 will do it)
Then I got into the .223 for small stuff, and never really thought about the .243 again. Real versatile cartridge, though. 55-100+gr.
Cool guns.

Looks like an all composite SKS. And i remain jealous of you guys with Swith and Wesson/Colt Carbines. I should start saving to get one of those sexy tactical weapons. Oddly enough i have not yet shot 5.56mm either. Love the 7.62 though.
Thanks... P-Mags is the only way to go, lol. With the AK, I ended up removing the cheap acrylic paint it came with from the factory (by accident) using brake cleaner. Although it's parkerized, it became an ugly dull grey. Ended up refinishing it in Dura Coat.
Fuze, if I were you, I'd save up for a piston actuated model. The direct gas impingement system is a poor outdated design, and dirty. I'm surprised they've been around this long. Then H&K comes out with a new piston upper, and it's like they've rediscovered the wheel, lol.

I have put thousands of rounds through DI ARs without cleaning and haven't had any issues. Sure, they'll get dirty.... but it doesn't seem to effect performance as long as you keep them oiled. (I usually use Mobil 1....or Amsoil....or Rotella T...LOL)
But I suppose that we could argue DI vs. piston all day long.

And it's not that I don't like piston rifles because I do.... I just wouldn't necessarily save up to buy a piston AR.
most notably the availability (and price) of parts. (and the availability and price of rifles altogether, really)
Yep, ammo is so stupid right now.... And I'm not sure it's gonna get much better any time soon.
Like .223 now... even the Federal bulk packs at wally world are like $40/100.(when you can find them) WTF?
That's why I started reloading. Reloading helps a lot. Like .45ACP is MUCH cheaper to reload, especially if you buy bulk projectiles.
But then shotgun shells are cheap as dirt!?? I used to reload the heck out of them, and as time went by, I realized it wasn't worth the effort because of powder and shot prices rocketing.
Makes no sense. It's all a conspiracy....

Well, believe it or not, I have a Lee single stage press in the basement where I built a reloading bench. It's got everything one needs to reload, literally; tumbler, dies, scale, ect. I managed to pick up a ton of once fired Lake City brass, with Winchester and Federal mixed in, more than I'll ever need. I've developed some starter loads in .223 using Accurate, CCI primers, and Lake City 55gr FMJBT (Berry's Bullets, Utah), starting from minimum load, up to moderate to see which ones would work best, using three loading books for reference. Now I know a big problem with reloading is getting accurate headspace, so I bought a Wilson headspace gauge and checked every single round, like 400 total. They've all been resized & trimmed, deburred, ect. They're all good.
The thing is, I'm afraid to shoot them through the AR, in fear that it might blow up, lol. So I have all this stuff in the basement, but I'm kinda stuck. Have you ever had any problems with your reloads in the AR?
Edit; I'm thinking maybe I ought to start with say a bolt action first, which are more forgiving.

What accurate powder are you using? That is really the defining characteristic. As long as you're using a rifle powder that's good with .223, (and you're near on weight) you'll be fine. Headspace is more for accuracy than anything.
.223 loads are very forgiving as long as you don't charge them with hot pistol powder or something. You can't double charge them because you'll know right away when the powder spills all over the place.
I'd shoot them up. Reloads are almost all I shoot. I have a lee progressive.
ARs are pretty dam forgiving.
I use a lot of Hodgdon BLC2 and H335. Also use Ramshot TAC a good bit.
Hell, some powders will spill over a .223 case, even at medium load! (mostly extruded powders, not so much ball powder)
You should be fine....
