I'd also take a VW Rabbit pickup - swap in the TDI motor, or a 2.0 Turbo and have a fun daily driver.

oh please just leave the el camino alone!!! dont ruin it like they did with the charger or gto. Its all brand engineering, dont let them slap a classic name on it just to sell it. Granted an american version of the holden ute would be sweet, and im all for it, i just dont want it to be branded as an el camino. Brand engineering is lame but of course a necessary part of economies of scale. Using old nameplates to try to sell a new car that doesnt fit its predecessors reputation though isnt right. The srt8 chargers are badass but THEYRE NOT CHARGERS. The gto was just a total fail, holden menaro with a gto badge for america to try to move units, and thats what a brand engineered holden based el camino will be for the us. LEAVE IT ALONE!! sell it as something else.

I love the idea of the El Camino coming back, but I agree, I just don't see it selling well. The Subaru Baja kind of had the same fate as the SSR, it was only in production for a few years. "Ute's" (car/trucks) are all the rage in Australia, but I'm not exactly sure why.

The Holden Maloo (Same platform the El Camino would be based on) is pretty badass though.

The dude that came to look at a car I'm selling ('72 Mazda RX3) turned up in a black one today. Very nice in black I must say.

I think the El Camino was one of the more confusing designs to come from GM. Was it a car or was it a truck? While it was different it is not something I would want to see on the streets again anytime soon. However, at least it would probably look better than their Aztek experiment.

I would be buying one next year if Pontiac hadn't been euthanized. 365hp V8 under hood, the G8's suspension, rear wheel drive, bed big enough for my mountainbikes or a sportbike.

Yeah it almost made it off the ground right before Pontiac bit the dust. It's too bad the g8 gxp had to die too after only one year, although I wish it had borrowed a little more styling from its Vauxhall and Holden siblings.

I agree that a lot of those don't hold up to their throwback names, but this new car is very representative of what the old el camino was. V8, RWD, half car half pickup, I would think 90% of the people who see one go down the road would think "is that a new el camino?" just out of instinct.

The weird thing - is that over there they are now using the leftover Pontiac front fascias and hoods as "custom" parts for their domestic Vauxhal/Holdens

Too bad the states never got a G8 version of the VXR8 Bathurst edition - guess the Caddy CST-V picks up that role- that one was a real beast.
