Yeah, it's basically an online sim game, but you play with real world currency. For instance, if you want to own land, you pay $$ to get your own island (couple $Ks), a sim portion (less than a couple $Ks), or a parcel (may run from $30 - whatever the market will bear/you pay). It's actually kind of cool as there's a lot of places you can "teleport" to...many "worlds" (Japan, Arabia, Canada, etc.) to live in. Real world casinos, houses of pleasure (yep), or whatever you feel like doing. Basically a darn good replica of the cesspool world we live in today
One of my "neighbors" owns a bike shop, so I fly (literally) over there to visit. You can buy working (you can actually drive it) cars, motorcycles, helicopters, yachts, whatever... The only drawback is your computer better be darn good because it'll shut down a basic setup quicker than LAPD at a rowdy bike night Check the requirements first and definitely try to exceed the minimum standards. My old HP laptop barely hung on, but my Alienware (shameless plug) lappy eats this stuff up without a hitch.
Right now, the only "drama" in my neighborhood is a virtual arsonist. Linden Labs (Second Life folks) will suspend/ban perps that run nasty little scripts (fire). Other than that, it's a nice place to visit and build things. I just built a ranch house and put a few sheep on my parcel. Not too bad
I'm going to try my hand at building bikes one of these days.

No, you don't need a premium account to just look around, but yeah, you need the premium account if you want to own land. You can always rent to see if you'll like it first (don't need a premium account for that). Plenty of virtual homes, townhouses, apartments, etc. to rent, just look around under the "Classified" section. Try and get a spot with low lag...you can see the traffic info on the property and it's very high, that area will have lots of lag.
