Anger, Frustration & Grief

I never thought I would write a post like this. But . . .
Last night the 21 year old grandson of one of my closest friends was killed. According to the news story a driver waiting at an intersection didn't see Nathan coming down the street on his Harley and pulled out in front of him. Nathan died at the scene of blunt force trauma to the head and chest. He wasn't wearing a helmet.
I feel anger because it was a senseless accident. One or both weren't paying attention. Perhaps Nathan was riding too fast, perhaps the driver was on his cell phone - no report was given. Even more anger because he wasn't wearing a helmet. I know he might not have made it anyway, but it sure would have bettered his chances.
Frustration at the Harley ( and others) 'ride for appearance' mantra that scoffs at helmets. You are so cool, riding with your hair in the wind, your face smeared on the pavement. Unfortunately there are many who ride sport bikes, sport tourers, whatever who feel the same way.
"it's my life, my body, nobody else gets hurt" they say. Tell that to my friend, who could barely speak through tears as he called to tell me his grandson, a young man I liked and admired, was dead. Or the parents. siblings, cousins, friends left behind.
Damn it people, GEAR UP! RIDE PROTECTED!
My grief shared with Nathan's family. his life was cut short almost before it started, leaving a huge hole in the lives of those left behind.
Rest in peace, Nathan. My prayers are with you, your family and friends.
