Your questions are not dumb at all .. I have lived around the canals all my life ..they have been kinda a way of life for me ... my parents had a boat on them in the 1980s ..(a leisure boat that we used to travel all over on) ..the canal system here in the UK was primarily used during the industrial age and were built in the late 1700s .. the narrow boats would be all horse drawn and full of cargo like coal etc. ..hence the paths that run along side the canals are called the tow paths ...a lot of the bridges here have all the wear marks on them from years of ropes sliding over them ... the canals go for miles and miles and you can spend days or weeks boating along them ..there are different sytems and lots are interconnected ..for some like the boat peopel its a way of life ...its a timeless place ..kinda the land that time forgot!!

Hey thanks for the history lesson, thats really cool. I cant believe those were built in the 1700 hundreds. That must have taken YEARS to complete. I keep noticing the black and red coloured boats in quite a few of your pictures over the last couple weeks or so. Are those always the same boats in your pics or are there hundreds of those things around???

Any pics of the West Country ?? Where i grew up............
Where abouts did you grow up?? ..I have lots of pics of South Wales, Pembrokeshire ... and a few from North Wales where I do most of my riding :-)

I have not been down to Cornwall or St Ives in years, probably 1991 last time ... I believe it to be quite busy now down there in holiday times ..its why i prefer Pembrokshire ... much quieter!! :-)

Jules

EDIT: Oh, I do have some nice pictures of the Cotswolds ...I must dig them out, only a couple of years ago I was there :-)

Red, the picture you have shown is of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and it crosses the River Dee valley ...you are on the Llangollen branch of the Shropshire canal ... I have done this journey by boat a lot in the past and have some spectacular images and scary ones too as you can literally fall off the side of the boat straight down into the valley!!
