ABS standard / mandatory?
Saw this at Sport Rider
Not entirely sure how I feel about this. Stopping a newbie from lowsiding after grabbing a handful of brake is a good thing. But something I don't like about driving cars with ABS is feeling the brake fade when it kicks in. I actually consider it a failure on my part to compensate for whatever caused them to kick in.
And I hate the feel of the pedal when they do kick in. Not sure how I'd feel with that happening on the brake lever. Anyone with ABS got a comment? Or any comments in general?

Well ive never ridden an abs model but if the levers react anything like they do in a car i would hate it as it most likely cause me to loose grip on the handle bar. Hopefully the gov will see motorcycle companys adding it as an option and leave it alone.
I hate how motorcycles always come under fire for safety issues. I bet if there was a study to show that having grill guards on a vehicle decreased deaths by 30% in head on collisions they wouldnt even think of making in mandatory because some bigshot wouldnt want his fancy car to look clunky.

I don't like the "mandatory" aspect here. I'm all for offering ABS as an option but I don't want the added weight, cost, and complexity of the system being forced on me.
What's next? Mandatory traction control so we can't do a smokey burn out?
Or Mandatory wheelie control so the front tire never leaves the ground?
Both could be considered safety measures designed to keep our sport/hobby/way of life safer but I feel motorcycling would lose much of its flavor if every bike was dummied down so that any simpleton could just get on a bike and ride, comfortable in the knowledge that Big Brother has taken away all the danger inherent to being on two wheels. Bring on the Mandatory training wheels! lol!

I don't really care about the "Big Brother" aspect of things beyond affecting the feel of my ride. When ABS kicks in on a car, I feel like I've lost control. Not a feeling I like
I would actually appreciate ABS on my bike (at least in theory, as I haven't ridden an ABS-equipped bike before). It would also be very nice if it didn't cost so blasted much, and making it much more widely available should bring prices down considerably. I wouldn't support it being mandatory, though.

Modern abs on bikes is pretty much unnoticeable, theres no brake lever fade. All it does it keep the tires from locking up and up till the point when you pull the lever hard enough to lock the tires up it does nothing at all, then it just unlocks the tire and maintains pressure at the very edge or braking ability. You can't really feel much happening through the lever, it stays solid.
Personally I'd love to have abs. I've come to realize a long time ago that sometimes crap just happens...in the cold, in the rain, on a sunny day and when you least expect it. I don't have so much ego that I can't admit that an abs system will slow the bike way faster than I, or any of you could. If that extra 10 feet or so of braking distance keeps me from coming through grammas side window when she pulls out in front of me, great. And when it's not needed, it's not in use. It's not like wheelie control where it's actually preventing something you may not always want to prevent...no one ever wants their tires locked up and sliding. I'm good on the brakes but not as good as these new abs systems and I ride rain or shine... I'd love it.

Had cars with ABS, but (touch wood) never had call to see how it works, but I guess its good that its there. In theory it means being able to steer (not locking the wheels & losing control) while applying brakes in emergency situations. Most people that I know in that situation & having to slam on the brakes in a car? Well lets just say 9/10 times that would still probably hit something. Veering out of the way is instinctive & has SFA to do with ability. Never had a bike with ABS, but a lot of bikes seem to be coming out with them, mandatory or not, their going to be on all bikes eventually anyway. Going to make it easier to sell the safety issue to worried parents "But its even got ABS mum!".
Thing that would worry me more would be the mandatory fitting of a engine governor or speed inhibitor. And believe me that gem has been banging around by so called "Safety" commissions since I 1st started riding, because we can't be trusted form ourselves.
If mandatory ABS can be viewed as another good reason why the shouldn't, then I could live with it.

Or Mandatory wheelie control so the front tire never leaves the ground?
The VFR1200 has a 5 degree max lift on the front end before the management system cuts in.
So def no wheelies !
ABS is a good thing IMHO - you get used to the lever movement.
