I'm going to have to disagree with you there. PCs are designed to do a variety of things, and unless somebody dumps THOUSANDS into the best components, it's very difficult to keep up with the next gen consoles. If you're willing the spend the money, and I'm talking upwards of 4 Gs, then you might outclass a PS3, but the price-to-power ratio when it comes to gaming is undoubtedly won by the consols. Consider this....for $500 or $600 you are getting the power of 8 processing units and a state-of-the-art GPU. Not to mention the fact that PC games are scaled down at times to tailor the average home PC, while developers for consol games are able to utilize the full power of the system without thinking about minimum requirements.

I will say, it is the reason why a PC will always have better graphics then consoles. The extra input devices means that we are able to have more complex games to play that are impossible are very difficult to implement on a console.

Here's a secret that a lot of people dont know and cant comprehend.
Every "disc console" that has come out IS a pc. The ONLY reason they are not considered a pc is they DO NOT use a mouse/keyboard.
They all have: Operating system, ram, storage (be that hard drive or mem card), video output, input (be controllers, accessories), able to play audio cd's, dvd movies (now HD dvd & Blu), networking port.
Pretty much all can be hacked to run linux too.
Now "cartridge consoles" are debatable cause they dont have an operationg system. You dont get a menu screen when turning it on without the game in. Now storage is on the game cartridge so yes it has storage. So other than not having an OS, its still pretty much a pc.

of course, I "don't know what I'm talking about," but the real difference is the proprietary hardware designed to render frames instead of run third party apps.

Consoles don't need settings because developers don't have to take into consideration different hardware configurations. That was my point. If you are going to max out your settings and have it run at a reasonable FPS, you are going to spend a considerable amount of money. Spend $500 on a PC and see how high those settings go. I was stating the obvious fact that you are going to have to spend about 5 times more money to get comparable performance on a PC. Sorry that hurt your feelings. If you going to argue that very obvious point, do it intelligently.

Stop crying. Thats part of owning a "gaming" pc. Just like owning a "modified bike". "I want my 600 to feel like a 1000." Well, your gonna have to spend some money.
Of course a $500 pc isnt gonna run the newest games. Durrrrrr Anyone with half a brain knows that.
You're talking as if PC owners dont own consoles.

actually, they do use mice and keyboards now.

the way I see it (to clarify I play both pc games and console games), you spend 500 dollars for a top of the line console and i'll use my computer I just built was about 1200. Now both of them can run the newest games. Well lets say 5 years down the road when the new xbox comes out you will have to buy the whole new system which at launch is what 6-700 dollars? Now with my computer, all I have to do is upgrade the video card and maybe a few sticks of ram. So for that reason, price really isn't an issue to me.
Whatever. It's a preference. I just prefer PC over console. I like the fact that I have the ability to experience the nuances of flying a helicopter or playing an RTS. WoW, Eve Online and City of Heroes/Villians provides a different type of immersion that I really don't get from consoles. I don't get the same escapism. On top of that, I can play games at 1920x1200, or play in windowed mode and continue checking my CBRForum posts.
Now, I have machine that is capable of doing my photoediting, gaming, programming, email, web browsing, document writing and whatever else. I can even play bluray for an additional $100. I can upgrade the components that I desire.
I can't put together a console. I get pleasure in putting together my own system. I also have all sorts of mass storage options for my 65,000+ MP3s
It's just my preference. Besides, if I played consoles back when I was younger, I probably would never be a DBA/Programmer now if I never played computer games back in the early 90s.

Also, console games don't drive technological developments as much as PCs. The reason you are playing those newer game systems is because the technology was developed over the years. Console technology becomes stagnant.
Force feedback, Rumble sticks, better graphics, hard drive space, memory, faster processors...all because of the PC.
Now.... Wii is an exception to the rule.
