from $26billion....to $34billion......WOW!
My 1st hand view of the Auto components industry ,here in Oz:
Ive been in it since '85.
Ford ,GMH were at the forefront for so many years, whereas Toyota were in last place circa '89.
These days, obviously due to the parent companies in the US,Ford,GMH are in dire straights...
Toyota are the Industry benchmark here in Oz.
Previously Nissan & Mitsubishi had/have will cease operations in Oz.
A lot of Ford components are sourced locally here in Victoria.GMH source there components from Korea & assemble them here.
For one of the few times in my life,i am looking at being made redundant.

Cars being the main form of personal transport for man....should have been rationalized many tens of years ago..
We should have started to understand that an item like the car with such a high resource usage burden, has to be made in mass and made by one huge company that can viably source , use and not waste resources on 10 different types 20 different models and updates every 12 months and in doing so cut the unit cost down to an absolute minimum...
Then you would not be looking at retrenchment because with one central manufacturer ...the gov and the system would have to reorganize its self to enable the manufacturer to survive regardless of bloody profitability...

East German built "Skoda's"....per chance mate?

Those communist countries had the right idea as far as manufacturing went at least..
Very few manufacturers...some government owned, run or backed ..
Simple designs that they used for many years not just 12 months then discarded ...

A bailout just delays the inevitable. I buy Honda, cars and bikes.
Screw em

anyone ever wondered why Harleys are so expensive ?
Or why Honda 1000RR's are so in expensive?
It is not that Harleys are better or have anything that special about them ..
and it certainly is not that the Honda's are lacking in anything...to the contrary, the Hondas are packed with technology that the Harley have not totally embraced...
The point is that the Honda motor company is huge!!!!!!! efficient and well managed..
Imagine if all the car manufacturers could be rolled into one ... and all the technology and expertise were thrown at one small group of vehicles to rationalize and produce a smaller range of vehicles that are made in vast numbers ...by one huge efficient well organized company..
Sure we may get a little bored with the reduced choice , but as a trade off the cars would cost much much less, all would be the most advanced that is possible and the company would have a type of monopoly to ensure its survival plus the survival of the workers jobs ...
Yer ...a totally radical scenario, but is the way they do it now going to last much longer ??
One or two more generations perhaps ? then what ?
a single mfg for all cars, trucks, motorcycles etc is preposterous....what do you think motivates technological advancement? competition, why do we have competition...profits. we'd all be driving model-ts if there was one sole manufacturer and henry ford had the lead in the early 1900s so realistically why would they improve a product that is completely original...something that dominates 100% of the market? The most prospering firms lead for a reason...they invest those gains into more R&D when the consumer as well as the supplier wins.
you have competition to thank for all the improvements and innovation that has graced us over the past thousands of years...not some "utopian fantasy" where I scratch your back and you scratch mine. On paper that's wonderful but it's not human nature in the least.

oh and honda, toyota, etc. practice managerial techniques that blow gm and ford away...kanban, kaizen, total quality management, etc are some of their developed manufacturing practices that were created to give them a leading edge. believe me, honda isn't in it for some 1984, "brave new world" thing where they supply all the cars and trucks anyone could ever need for 100 bucks a piece. They just found a way to provide quality cars people need, and do so at an affordable cost. they dissected the manufacturing process and optimized it. While the big 3 were relying on their "buy american" or "a gto is as american as apple pie" strategies, the eastern firms were streamlining the mfg'ing process to crush the western competition. While gm and ford were pushing suvs and luxury full sized trucks honda and toyota were counting their billions
