OK, so I want the bike now. This forum really gets you into it. When you go to buy the bike, what does the dealer require for you to ride it off the lot? What's the process of getting permit? I looked at the DMV site and they state that you need a bike to take the test. Can anyone elaborate on the whole process.

 

the dealership doesnt care if you have a liscense for a motorcycle or not as long as they get their money

 

some on here are saying if you're financing... you have to have insurance... to have insurance they have to have a license. So, you need to check with your local area. I had insurance on bikes with out a license so I had no problem. where are you and what bike are you thinking about

 

I am in Atlanta. I will be paying cash for a CBR600RR. To get a license, do you contact your DMV and apply?

 

Most of the time to get your license updated to motorcycle riding requires a written test, eye exam, permit, then finally driving exam. Or you can take the msf course which will give you a license in 3 days first day is in class where you will take test at the end and get your permit. The next two days are 10 hrs or hands on driving traning. Then your evaluated if you pass that you can go to your local dmv with a certificate saying you passed the msf and they will upgrade your license. You should deffinitly do eather or before you go buy your bike rather than doing a rush job. Just my 2 cents....

 

not true, u need valid licese or permit at least plyus proof of insurance before you can drive it off.

 

All great advice. I am now looking at the MSF course. I will get a hold of my State Farm Ins agent and talk with them. Thanks for the advice.

 

l8x, I guess your dealership is the only one that does.

 

If you're paying cash for the bike, I'm sure they don't care about insurance. Most states take the MSF course as your riding portion of your exams. So all you have to do is go take the written exam for the laws/signs and get your permit. Once you complete the MSF course, take the certificate back to the DMV and they will issue you a new driver’s license with the endorsement.

 

1. Motorcycle Safety Course (card or certificate will do)
2. Driver/Rider Test (DMV) if required in the state you're getting licensed in
3. Rider insurance if required in the state you're getting licensed in
3a. You need full coverage if you are financing the bike

If you cover these before going to the dealership, you should be okay.
