Default Vertical License Plate

Anyone out there knows if it's illegal to have a verticle License Plate on your Bike (CBR 600RR),
in the State of NY?

Hello and welcome the forum Thorax. From my research, there isn't much info saying yes or no as to the location of the plate. Just as long as it's visible and has a light you will pass. I know here in Virginia it's legal and we have some really strict/messes up laws. You best bet would be to call or check with your state inspection guys. They are the one that will have the right answer without a doubt. I call mine anytime I'm thinking about something and that is where I got the "as long as it's visible and lighted" part. They did tell me they will fail my inspection if I remove the reflectors from the bike like most people around here do. I just took mine off, but the law states you have to have a certain size of red (back) and yellow (front) reflective METERIAL that is visible for some distance like 100 yards. I'm thinking about having reflective decals made at a local shop, like replacing the 600RR with all red reflective on the back and maybe a reflective DUNLOP logo on the front fender. That'll keep me legal.

Thanks Don. I just got back from the Honda dealer, they also do the bike inspections here in NY and he said the same thing you said about the license plate. So I just bought a light for the plate, now I just have to figure out how I'm going to mount it.

Cops don't like vertical plates b/c you can only see it from one side. It also creates a strange view for them to look at. However, on Harleys they can place their plates on one side horizontally and nothing will be said to them.

What it comes down to is, Is there a State Law written that says you can't have your plate mounted verticaly on your Bike. I went to the NY State website & looked at the traffic Laws, and it does not say anything about the plate mounting (code 411 is the code [LAW] for motorcycles plate display). I think that Cops are modefying the Traffic laws.

if that police officer cannot read your plate, or if it is not visible he might pull you over. it will probably depend on how the guys day is going. a cop can and will pull you over for it. well thats NJ anyway.
