Really great thread to start, some excellent information...

I will probably repeat what you all have said but just want to add my piece.

-Ride with smart people, preferabbly better riders than you, to help YOU learn and push yourself in a safe manner.
-Keep a level head: know your limits, know the conditions on the road, watch the weather channel, plan...
-Wear your gear in all conditions, something is better than wearing nothing and feeling "cool"
-Keep your bike maintained: oil, tires, chain, etc. You dont want alittle failure when you are out riding around, especially something that could have been prevented with some lube or air pressure.

KEEP IT SAFE OUT THERE!

WOW!!! awesome info on this thread!! Ive been riding off and on for several years now, but all of this info has been more than helpful in preparing for the up coming season!! I already have a nice leather jacket, and gloves, pants are on the list but i was reading about the ankle covering boots.... any options other than race style boots... you know something a lil more umm street friendly i guess you could say...

before i bought my alpinestars boots, i just rocked some steeltoe work boots that i got from walmart. they worked great (never asphalt tested them, lol) and i felt comfortable/safe in them compared to sneakers.

If you buy a used bike that hasn't been ridden much, check tire date code.
Even if they look new, old tires will be slicker than owl **** on the wet.

After getting your first bike and riding for a bit, you'll start to feel more confident. Its at this point you'll feel the need possibly to push harder and harder. I suggest taking a look at signing up for a local track day/track school or schedule the advance MSF course.
