In Georgia where they have two motorcycle license tiers (599 cc and below and 600 cc and above) I took the MSF course to get my license. I had never ridden a motorcycle before but knew that I wanted more than 599 cc for a bike. Since everything they had at the MSF course was less than 599 cc and I needed to pass the test on a 600 cc and above to get the higher level license, I bought a Katana 600 before the course and rode it during the course. Now I have the unlimited motorcycle license.
Check into your states rules on motorcycle licenses to be sure you won't be stuck with a license that won't let you ride the bike you want. If you buy before the course just ride carefully until you get your license and later more experience. Check to see if you need a temporary motorcycle permit to get to and from the MSF class also.
It worked for me so you can do it too.
