Newb looking for a first street bike and really torn. Looked at the fz6/8 cbr600/500 ninja 300/650 and was thinking of just going with a 250 since my commute is only 10 miles and its 45mph or less the entire trip. I have some dirt experience on bikes and quads and recently got my M endorsement added.

Any advice? I'm a bigger rider 6-0 300lb so I was hesitant to look at the 250 at all.

Welcome to the CBR Forum,

Fist off I'd ask you is the bike just for the commute or do you intend to do some weekend riding as well?

If it is just the commute the 250 may be the better option.

But if you want some fun in your day - look to the 600. With your experience on dirt it should translate to safe riding on the road, so don't let the size put you off.

Just my humble opinion.

Cheers, SB

Welcome to CBRF... My vote goes to the 600... I think you would quickly out grow the 250... imho... but you will enjoy either... Good Luck on the hunt...

nothing wrong with a 600 to start out on. i'm 230 @ 6', i had an f3 for my first bike and did great. you're not too big for a 250 though - it's just nothing beats the rush of an I4 - and others have said, after you get some miles under your belt, the 600 will give you many thrills.

smaller bikes are fun to rip WOT on, but they still leave a little to be desired imho.

welcome to CBRF. stick around - there's tons of real world riding info here as well as bike info

Welcome to the forum.

At least 600 for sure... It will feel sturdier in turns with you being 300 pounds of rider if you do any pleasure riding, and I'm sure you will .

Which bikes are you considering?

8k will get you a lot of bike. For that money, you could easily get just about any 600 out there or even a 954 or 929 in decent shape.
Don't forget to save some budget for gear.
