Default New to this and some help

Hello -

I am new to the forums and though i have had my motorbike for 5 years, i've only really used it for commuting and done very little maintenance work on it. I am now planning to get more involved with biking and wanted to join a good community, so here i am!

I have a 1999 CBR 600F - and use have used it intermittently for commuting. I am going to take it for a long-ish ride and intend on getting it serviced. There are two things i need advice on -

1. i recently lost a mirror bolt and need to order a replacement (Honda part number 966000601407). this is the bolt that fixes the mirror to the fairing. Does anyone know the dimensons of it or what cheap alternative i can order that will do the job? i just want a regular bolt that will work fine.

2. I am going to get the bike serviced but wanted to do some of the basic mechanic stuff myself - does anyone have any advice on where to start / online resources that i can use / books etc so that I can read around the subject before i get going?

Welcome to the forum Lee. I think but not 100% sure the bolt is 6x13mm.

I'd think a good place to start is to get the (Haynes?) manual and get the basic tools(like a good wrench and socket set etc)_ if you don't have already. You can look around the forum for advice. Plenty of stuff available already and if you need to ask something specific head over to the bike specific forum or just the general tech forum. cheers

Welcome to the forum.
How is the bike generally speaking and what is the mileage. I would of thought that with your willingness to learn and the knowledge base here, if all it needs is a simple service, you can save yourself the cost of a mechanic and get familiar with your bike.
This will give you more confidence of tackling anything that might need attention during your riding and you can just enjoy your riding without worrying about breaking down.
Haynes manual as cbr guy recommended is a good shout to keep alongside you as you progress.

There's no greater pleasure than maintaining your bike yourself, not just that there is a huge saving on workshop costs, but I find I can take my time, be more methodical and prepare my bikes to a much higher standard. Plus I'm more careful when removing fairings etc.
