Welcome gcharlie! Flat footing will help a lot when first learning, but it is not an absolute must, but helps with confidence at the beginning. Get a lowering kit if you need it, just do it right. Check out this post:

It's only a problem if you make it one. I'm 5'2" and did not touch the lowering links....I only got it tuned to my weight and eliminated the sag. It's just fine, but of course took some time getting used to.
