I have only ever owned Hondas and am considering getting an Africa Twin for my trip to (Funnily enough) Africa (If it ever happens).
I would happily go on my CBR100f though as I will only really be doing tarmac with mild gravel(Cant be tougher than snow - right?)
Having said that the bike Steve just posted though - might have to do a bit of research
Oh also would consider a Benelli Trek

That Benelli is a bad *** looking piece of work Steve......wicked
The choice between all of these hybrid off road rockets I feel is just a matter of personal taste...
They all seem to be configured much the same and all have very similar feature's , so I suppose which one you buy would be maybe be mostly driven by your budget (how much you have to spend ) in combo with what you think looks the best and suits you..
They all seem pretty bloody nice ...

Steering away
No, no Sir Trout your honor. I am not trying to steer you away from a KLR650, I am just saying to me the dual purpose bikes do nothing well, so I would rather have two bikes. And of course, I have 4 in the garage right now, so 2 only would make my wife happy. Also, neither one of my bikes can go off road well. Of all the dual purpose bikes, I would either get a DL1000 V-Strom or if I wanted more dirt ability, I would get the KLR650. I actually really like both bikes, but I am hooked on fast motorcycles after spending 15 years on 1903 technology Harleys. My first choice for this area would be the DL1000 V-Strom since my off road would be on dirt/gravel roads only. If I were to be a trail rider, I would go for the KLR650.
There, I took a stand on the middle of the fence again, didn't I?
P.S. For the price, get the KLR650, but read about them, they had a tranny problem or something like that, that Kawi said, "Did not exist", but the owners had a lot of "same thing breaking" on those bikes. Read up on the problems of those bikes. You don't get anything cheap without a caveat emptor.

He he... maybe you should get a little something for your adventurous side. Hell, at least it's not a hooker, right....
The idea of having a bike for each is a good one. It's probably the best way to go. I just don't want to be tied down to trailering the bike everywhere, if you know what I mean. I think the idea of dual sport may be more appealing than the actual functionality, but I do believe that the KLR is capable enough to get the job done (for the most part).
I know you and steve have been riding a while, and I wanted your opinions which is why I asked. I figured you'd have some good input, and you did. I appreciate it.
I did hear something on one of the forums about a trans problem....maybe linkage or something? I'll have to look into that if I decide to go that route.
But hell, maybe down the road I'll get sick of whatever I get and decide on something else. Who knows. Sounds like fun, though...

I have nearly killed myself quite a few times on road bikes , some of them were real close but on the dirt , I prolly have gone even closer on many more occasions than the road...
These duel purpose ride have one big thing going for them , that we have mentioned as a possible draw back...
" they are not perfect at either type of use " road or dirt..
This fact I think is what would save me from disaster during either use on them...(duel purpose bikes that is)
Unlike a full on XR500-XR600 (which tried to kill me on too many occasions ) I would be reluctant to go too crazy in the dirt with the knowledge that they are not really made to thrash around the tracks on...
and ...by the same token , they are not made to go ballistic on the roads either , so I think I would be inclined to ride one on the road allot tamer than I scoot around on my old girl ..
(that BTW I would never sell to buy a duel purpose bike)

Excellent point, steve....but that's no fun...
I agree that my F'er isn't going anywhere.
To trade her for a dual.... well that's just blasphemy!!
I blast my old girl all the time, which is why I never get good mileage.
(did I mention that I FINALLY layed off the throttle long enough to get a tank at 40mpg!! I think I only managed it because I was riding with the harley boys all night... )
You're right about the KLR probably being safer on the trail, too.
I doubt a whole lot of people would say....when riding a pig like the KLR..."Think I can jump that huge stump...then drop that cliff...through the river...and back up that mudbank?"
I don't think so. Well....wait...that's exactly what I would do. Then I would need a winch and a medivac helicopter.
