Angry starter grrrrrrrrr!

On my 87 hurricane 1000 when I start my bike the starter engages fine but after about 5 seconds or so the starter disengages and makes a grinding noise. The grinding isn't very loud, could this possibly be caused by a weak solinoid?

Starter clutch is a possibility. Could also be be a weak solenoid.Low battery ??

They do draw a lot of power when starting, I had mine jam the starter in because of a low batery. Sat and waited for the recovery truck and when he turned up (yep you guessed it, the starter disengaged and the bike started!!)The first bloke they sent out tried to tell me the "cam belt" had snapped!
I believe you can get a service kit for the starter, try David Silver (in the UK)
