I just got the elecrex R/R on my to replace mine that blew up and I LOVE IT!!! Its cheaper than Honda's, better quality, better warranty, and just looks (and works)cooler

FYI.... the bolts that held your factory one on will not fit they are too short. At least mine were. I had to dig throught my nuts and bolts bins to find a couple to work.

Yes - I should have mentioned the bolts, sorry Michael.
It's a fat old reg/rec for sure. Well worth the effort IMO - especially as they start charging much lower than Honda originals - the Electrex unit gives me over 14V at 1400 revs or so........great for high traffic/ extra electrical goodies like the electric jackets etc etc......
or Trouts foot and ***** warmers...

I'm with you on this one House. There is so much written about the R/R that I'm thinking to replace mine as part of the maintenance this winter. I did have a problem last year at the end of the season where my battery ended up dry during a long solo trip. I was able to pour water in it and the bike started immediately. Got home found the old one would not chrge and replaced it. Of course I checked regularly and have had no problems....but I am paranoid now since I have a tendency to roll in far away places solo.
Whats the general advice, should I just replace to feel comfortable about this little guy? Thanx in advance.....

Nope only one (genuine) there was a change from 87/88 type1 to 89 onwards type 2
If you have the unit with two separate sets of wires, it's a mark one, but shouldn't be. The 89 on had a single plug on the left rear side under the rear panel...........
Hope this helps.
