There were so may replies I only read about half, but I had very similar problems. If this is a duplicate reply, please forgive me.
When I bought my 96 Cal, mod. the tank was a mess, really bad rust. During the cleaning process I got a handful of rust chips out of the tank. I took the carbs off a second time and crap was in them and blocking 2 pilot jets, let me jump to the end, 5th removel, washed all passages out with 2 cans of carb spray. I found that compressed air would not remove very much debris, carb spray would "wash" it out.
U have to check the pilots very carefully, it is very difficult to tell if blocked because of their size,
U said u balanced the carbs, does that mean u synronized them? U also said that it wouldn't idle, and U can't syncro them in that case.
If any of this sounds like it may be ur problem let me know and I can fill in the details, because there was a LOT more to the cleaning process.

I think you guys are forgeting that I just mixed up the plugs recently. It wasn't the whole problem. The problem was that melted the diaphragm in the cleaner. Which is guess isn't that much better, but I did read the manual a lot, it just didn't have to many answers.
