HA HA! I thought my bike was a standard model, and I just looked up the VIN and it is a california! I set the pilot screw to 2.5 turns out, it should be 2.75!

Still won't run. I adjusted the screws out to 3 turns and it is still backfiring like mad and won't run. I can't believe that didn't do it. Still perplexed.

I think that my intake boots are leaking. I have been taking off my carbs alot to work on them and I think that it has just worn them out. A couple of them look like crap, are they hard to replace?

I am going to work on it more tomorrow but I also wanted to say that it backfiredthrough the exhaust as well as through the carbs today and I didn't know why it did that. Too lean a mixture?

Are you absolutely sure that all your plugs are firing...and consistently?
If they're fouled up you'll likely have backfiring from random fire. How do they look? Are some wet, are some not?

Finally a suggestion that is other than the carbs. ... Tired of the carbs.

I am not sure about the plugs, I looked at them firing, but wouldn't know if they were at the wrong times. I will see if any are fouled tomorrow.
